Thirteen

Thinking that it was the right time to reveal her presence, Naeria dropped her cloak.

“I knew I liked her for a reason.”

Mildred spun around to look at her.

“You were here all this time?”

“Hannah informed me that Iris had forced her way inside and was en route to your room. I wanted to make sure that you were safe.”

With a loud sigh, the blonde threw herself back on the bed and closed her eyes. Sensing the woman’s confusion, she came to sit on the bed and stroked her hair.

“What’s wrong, Milly?”

“She did it to protect me and I burned all her letters without reading them.” She opened her eyes and the look in them was sad. “I can tell that it must’ve hurt her not to hear back from me.”

A blind person could tell that Iris Pembrooke was hurting and still pining for her former lover. It strongly affected her to witness the woman’s pain, knowing that the redhead had missed her chance with Mildred. And Naeria agreed completely with Iris; she did deserve that kiss that was owed to her.

“I’m only beginning to understand what it really means to love someone and I’m terrified of the strong emotions it evokes in me. It’s selfish enough to want to be the only person in your beloved’s life. I also rejoice in the knowledge that it could be selfless enough to sacrifice your own happiness for the person you love.” She wiped at a single tear that ran down the blonde’s cheek. “Is that what’s bothering you; you feel you missed out on the love of a good woman?”

Mildred nodded.

“And guilt. She doesn’t deserve someone who couldn’t afford her the courtesy of listening to an explanation. She is much better off without me.”

“Oh, now, Milly. I will not sit here and let you disparage my daughter like that.” She smiled when Mildred gave her a weak smile. “If you are destined to be together then it will happen. But don’t let feelings of guilt make you miss your chance of meeting your true mate.”

Mildred hoisted herself on an elbow, her blue eyes sombre.

“Do you really believe that? That my true partner is out there?”

“I do.” Elena’s face flitted before her eyes as she remembered last night when she held the sleeping brunette. “It may have taken me two thousand and twenty years to experience love for the first time. If I could find my mate, anyone can.” She smiled. “And I can assure you that I’m the last person to deserve such a gift.”

“Now who’s the one disparaging my mother,” Mildred snapped.

Naeria gently nudged the blonde’s knees.

“You need to rest. This time I’ll help you sleep, no arguments.”

A little reluctantly, the blonde allowed herself to be glamoured and Naeria sat on the bed with her, her mind replaying their conversation.

Iris’ admission to having broken up their relationship to save Milly made a great impact on her. Not only did it make her appreciate the woman more, but it also made her realise that she wanted to love Elena that way.
