NORTHER

U3A stands for ‘University of the Third Age. Maybe I am now in my

third age.’ I am still a work in progress. Still learning. Still exploring.

My life has entered a new phase. I have retired from paid work. A

Christian though never retires from service to Jesus. I have passed

a crossroads and am awaiting orders as to how I serve Him now.

My first ‘age’ was till I was 25, living in Cumbria. The second was 31

years in Lancashire. The third age has begun with our move to

Northumberland. I have always lived in the North. I am now in

128 of 201

Northumberland. Which Is ’Norther’ than Lancashire or Cumbria..

What the future holds only God knows. Retirement is the order of

the day at the start of the third age and has seen us move from

Lancashire to start a life in The North East. We firmly believe that

moving to the North East is the call of God. What for? I can’t wait to

find out.

The move was a most stressful time for me. As I’ve said, Paid work

gradually dried up and I began to look to wanting to retire.

Financially things came together. I won’t go into into detail but in

God’s timing the money to make the move was in place.

We sold our house in Lancashire in October 2017 and set our

sights north. We’d been looking at houses in Northumberland since

the February of that year. Finally we found one which we were

convinced was right. We put in an offer and it was accepted. This

was the start of September 2017. The seller informed us that he

couldn’t move out though till his partner’s house had also sold. We

were prepared to wait as we were convinced it was the right house

for us.

Sally still had a couple of years before retirement so she applied for

jobs in Northumberland. We wanted to live within about 15 miles to

the North of Newcastle. This was because we wanted to be within

easy travelling distance of our daughter Hannah and also we

wanted easy access to the Northumberland countryside. Hannah

had moved to Tyneside from Lancashire 3 years previously to

study at Newcastle University. Our Daughter Ellie was moving to

Northumberland with us.

Sally’s last job in Lancashire had been as a receptionist in a

Doctor ’s Surgery. She applied for the same posts in

Northumberland and God provided! She got a post in a coastal

town within 15 miles of Newcastle! This was to start on the 20th of

November. We all couldn’t yet move North so we needed a place

still in Lancashire temporarily. Again God provided.! Some friends of

ours who had a house in Lancashire in the next town to our old one

and who worked abroad most of the year offered us their empty

house. We put our furniture in storage and moved into this

furnished house. Sally, Ellie and me had 6 weeks there then Sally’s

new job started so she moved up to stay with Hannah in Her

Newcastle student house along with Hannah’s other house mates.

So we were then split up. We were living out of suitcases . Ellie and

me in Lancashire and Sally in Newcastle.
