TEN

It was 4:15 when Nelson Bridges pulled the old F150 off to the side of the logging road. They were deep in the woods, miles from the paved highway that led to the lookout at Devil’s Head Campground.

“I know she’s listening, and I don’t rightly care, Ms. James. The two of you gals are clearly caught up in something elicit here. I don’t reckon the law’s gonna factor in our business one way or the other. Am I right, Ms. Computer Lady?”

Vivian was silent.

“Please, Mr. Bridges. My children are all alone. My daughter is injured. I’ll do whatever you want—I have money, and I can pay you—but I need to get to them. You have to take me there. Please, Mr. Bridges! Please, I’ll do anything…”

“Don’t beg, Ms. James. I hate that. And I reckon you already know how this is going to end. Lookit,” he said, pointing to the snow flurries. “It’s pretty likely they won’t find you until spring. Ms. Computer Lady might know where we are, but she’s in a hard spot, too, sounds like. Kidnapping. Maybe murder. I don’t reckon we’ll have any Colorado State Troopers on our tail today, will we Ms. Computer Lady?”

Terri choked back a sob. Why had the fates let her come so far, only to meet up with this crazy asshole?

“There’s not a lot of split-tail down in Victor, Ms. James. We hunters…well, we’re always on the lookout for fresh game. My boy wanted a crack at you, but God almighty it’s been so long since I had me a solo hunt! I’m going to come around to the other side now. Don’t try anything funny.”

He stashed his pipe, collected a small satchel from beneath his seat and slid down from the cab. The sun hung just over the western peaks, the trees casting long shadows on the powdery snow.

About an hour remained, and then it would really get cold. Temperatures would probably plummet into the teens before 6:00.

His door slammed shut and Vivian spoke up quickly.

“You need to make a run for it, Terri. He’s right—I can’t call the authorities. But if I don’t hear from you in fifteen minutes, I’m going to go get Mike and Erin myself. I promise you, I’ll get them someplace warm and we’ll see to Erin’s arm. Your children will be safe.”

Terri was conflicted. Twin feelings of relief and disgust washed over her: relief that her children would be looked after, and disgust that they would be under Bowles’s care. “Don’t you touch them! I’ll be there, you crazy bitch,” she hissed. “You better hope he fucking kills me, Vivian! You better pray that you don’t hear from me, because if I get away I’m going to end you!”

Bridges appeared at her window. He tipped his head, eyebrows raised. “Remember, Ms. James…no funny business!”

“Do it,” Vivian whispered. “Run! Get out of there!”

He opened the door. “Come on down, now. Leave that computer deal there. Bye, Ms. Computer Lady! You take care, now! Step on down, Ms.
