Nine:

“Dylan, good luck with your tennis tryout!”

Elisa said to me. We’d spent the entire afternoon together; minus the class we didn’t share in common. There was a lot of family history between our people, so we kept finding new things to talk about.

I VM’ed my moms and told them I met Elisa, and they all seemed so excited, and immediately extended an invitation for her to come have dinner with us at our earliest convenience. Mom and momma were both home, but mother was still trying to figure out what happened to the coyote lycan who’d been next to our room.

Faith was shadowing my movements, and she watched Elisa and me from a discreet distance. I’d not yet introduced my new friend to my literal shadow.

“You do realize that mixed Asian chick is tailing us, right?”

Elisa asked, and I snorted, as I waved to Faith. She flashed over to us a moment later, only startling Elisa for a moment. I could tell just from a cursory observation that Elisa still wasn’t accustomed to the speed of immortal movements. That was understandable, give than she was born of mortals.

“Elisa, Faith, Faith, Elisa.” I introduced them and I expanded, “Faith is my friend and kinda like a bodyguard. She’s Mavis’ Shadow Knight.”

Elisa’s eyes shone in recognition.

“Dad told me about you before, but I never saw pix.”

Faith gave a toothy grin of mischief and pride.

“I wouldn’t be much of a kage if I allowed everyone to take still shots of me. Even though your father is held in high regards, the Queens decided the identities of the Knights was more important to keep low key. Your father never tried to photograph me, since he understands the need for discretion when one is a high-level protector of royal children.”

Elisa nodded her understanding and she studied Faith for a few moments.

“You’re so damn tiny, how the hell are you the shadowy killing machine I’ve heard so much about?!”

Elisa blurted, and Faith chuckled, and said, “I like you. You’re a lot like your father, but I can also see plenty of your mom in you as well.”

Elisa seemed to perk up and arch her brow in question.

“You know my mom and dad?”

Faith waggled her hand side-to-side.

“I met your mom a few times back when she was fighting at our side against Calder. She was brave as hell and managed to survive the battles. Gin, well, he’s one of my oldest friends in this dimension. He liked listening to my accounts of life growing up as a human slave on Keimusho.”

Elisa studied Faith again, with a new light.

“I’d completely forgotten you were one of those people. I watched Katie Roger’s documentary a bunch of times. I wish I could have seen your world while it was still around.”

Faith bit her lip and sighed.

“I regret we didn’t get to fully liberate Keimusho, and I regret how many humans lost their lives in Calder’s shattering of the dimension. What I don’t regret, however, is that the world is gone. That place was nothing but a reminder of the chains we’d been born.
