Chapter Fifteen – Ash

My heart beat in my chest like a wild animal, threatening to burst from its cage. I dragged Will to the sidewalk in front of Sawyer’s house, tossing one last look at the big white house before we went. The look Sawyer had given me was murderous. Absolutely murderous, and it made me happy. I wanted him to be upset, I wanted him to hate himself for letting me get that close…

But it was only the beginning of what I had in store for him.

“Oh, man,” I chuckled, glancing at Will. “That was…it went better than I thought.” I ran my tongue over my teeth, tasting a bit of metal. Blood. Sawyer’s blood. I swallowed it down, giddy like a schoolgirl.

“He seemed pretty pissed,” Will commented, and we stopped before crossing the four-lane road to return to campus.

“He was,” I spoke, grinning. My hand tightened around his. “He was so pissed, it was great.”

Will said nothing as he looked down at our hands.

Right. I should let him go. We didn’t need to hand-hold all the way back to the dorm. Talk about awkward…but when I tried to release his hand, his fingers remained firmly around mine. He wasn’t letting me go.

“I don’t like that you’re mixed up with them,” Will whispered, his hazel stare looking dark under the night sky. We stood near no street lamps, so shadows danced across his face every time a car drove by. He was just stating how he felt, and yet I prickled.

He was not trying to tell me what to do, and yet I went off.

“And I don’t like you judging me for being mixed up with them,” I shot back, trying to pull my hand back, but he refused to let go. “I’m only involved with them because of Declan, remember?”

Who the hell was he to piss on my high? I was feeling good until now.

“It never ends with them,” Will said.

“I don’t care,” I said, once again tugging my hand. “Let me go.”

He gave me a strange look. “No.”

I would’ve given him a smack to the chest if I would’ve had a good second hand. As it was, my other hand was splinted still, and I didn’t want to risk slowing the healing process, so I settled for glaring. “What do you mean, no?”

“I mean,” Will said, holding onto my hand with an intensity that almost hurt. “I don’t know how Declan does it. Live with you. See you every day and not…”

When he said nothing more, I asked, “Not what?”

“Not do this,” he muttered, releasing my hand…only to grab my face and kiss me. His strong hands cupped my cheeks, tilting my head up to his, and I was completely caught off-guard, my eyes wide open when his mouth met mine, kissing me with a fervor I wasn’t prepared for. He pulled his lips off mine only an inch, his breath hot on my face, a stark contrast to the cool night air. “I shouldn’t have done that,” he added.
