Chapter Twelve
âCan you?â Master Sparks again looks surprised and pleased.
âYou can?â Mom looks appalled.
âI can,â I clarify. âJudy probably can, but she wonât try.â
âI did try.â Judy flashes me a look. âAnyway, I can do something you canât.â She holds up her fork with a particularly undercooked bite of antelope steak on the tines, and blows a tendril of fire at it. It sizzles for a second before she pops it into her mouth.
Since Iâve seen her breathe fire before, itâs not such a surprise to me. I glance at my parents for their reaction. Iâd half expected Mom to be whimpering and freaked out again, but instead sheâs giving Dad a look thatâs so clear I can read it even though sheâs not a dragon.
I told you so.
And Dadâs giving her that sheepish look back, the one that begrudgingly admits that maybe, against all reason, he should have believed his wife.
âYouâve seen her blow fire before?â I ask, feeling stunned and maybe a tiny bit betrayed that theyâve never told us.
âNot as much as that,â Mom clarifies. âBut you know my rule about not letting the two of you drink soda pop? Do you know why that is?â
âBecause the sugar makes us hyper?â Judy recites the explanation weâve always been given before.
âWell, that too,â Mom admits. âBut there were a couple of timesâone was at a birthday party when you were ten, the other was at the back-to-school picnic two years agoâyou drank soda and thenâ¦â
âBelched fire?â I ask, since Mom seems reluctant to say the words out loud.
âHardly more than a tendril of smoke,â Mom assures us. âCertainly not open flames like that. But it was enough to make me wonder.â
âWhat else is weird about us?â I ask. âWhat other things have you seen and never told us about?â
Mom bites her lower lip and shrugs.
Dad offers, âYour obsession with flying. When you were a kid, youâd jump off of anything. Tree limbs. The back deck. The roof of the garage. Youâd get on the swings at the playground and swing as high as you could go, then jump off.â
I grin, remembering.
âYou frightened your kindergarten teacher half to death. She called us the very first week of school. She was certain youâd broken every bone in your body, jumping off the swings and sailing thirty feet through the air.â
My grin fades. âYou made me promise not to do it after that.â
âYou could have hurt yourself,â Mom says.
âOr maybe,â Dad realizes out loud, âyou couldnât have.â
âDragons are built of tougher stuff than most,â Mike clarifies. âHe probably would have been fine, but you were right to ask him not to do it. Best not to give the other children ideas. They would have hurt themselves.â
Judy polishes off her last bite of steak. âWhat else can we do?â
âYour hearing and sense of smell have always been quite keen,â Dad notes. âThough itâs your ability to see things that always surprised us most.â
âWhy didnât you tell us?â Judy asks.
Dad shrugs. âWhy alarm
