The How

One advantage of a push is that it doesn't need a lot of preparation. And clearly, to get more buy-in, it's important to have some authority or expertise in the focus area. Although a push may feel authoritative at first, the expertise or respected experience of a colleague often makes the difference between a successful push and one that isn't appreciated.

You don't need to spend a ton of time and effort researching or building materials for your push, but it does make great sense to "think forward" and consider its impact. We can do that through using a SWOT analysis, a quick tool often used in business to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for a given action, change, or goal. By taking a few minutes to write down what you hope to gain from your push and what might stand in your way, you'll be better prepared to use a push—or to walk away from one force in favor of another. Considering the possible pushback goes a long way to solidifying (or abandoning) your push and clarifying your goals.
