Sara and Terry left the pub an hour earlier than Grace and Liv, who fully understood why they wanted to take off. Grace was pretty sure Liv wanted to go home, too, but once she got into a game of pool with Izzy, Liv was no longer in a hurry. Her competitive streak was in full blossom, and by midnight, it was three out of five games for the win. Izzy was up by two.

Grace crossed her arms over her chest and leaned against the wall to watch game three. She enjoyed the way Liv looked when she was concentrating on her next move. The way she rested her lean body against the table when she stretched herself out to make a difficult shot. The room was certainly heating up, and Grace was sure the two beers she’d had weren’t helping one bit. Alcohol had that effect on her, and right then she’d have jumped Liv’s bones if they were home and alone.

But a small crowd stood around the pool table, chatting and having fun watching the two women. Liv’s shirt rode up to expose her abdomen when she made a difficult shot. The sight made Grace ache to touch her.

“I bet my money on the kid with the green hair,” a familiar voice said from beside her.

Grace opened her mouth to speak, but when she realized who the woman was, speech failed her. Carly, one hand wrapped around a bottle of beer, leaned against the wall next to Grace. She was intensely watching the pool game. Grace felt her blood run cold as her legs refused to obey her command to move.

“Kid’s pretty good, but that wife of yours is holding her own. More or less. She looks kinda hot in those tight jeans.”

“What—what the hell do you want?”

Carly never took her eyes off Liv. “I already told you, Gracie. I’m not leaving until you agree to come with me.”

“It won’t happen. You’re delusional.”

“No, I’m determined. There’s a big difference.” Carly put her now empty beer bottle on a nearby table. “Oh look. I’ve been spotted. Here comes the big bad-ass now.”

“You fucking bitch!” Liv threw down the cue stick and hurled herself at Carly. She grabbed her shirt with both hands and yanked her away from Grace. She held Carly close to her face, her eyes wild with anger. “I’m going to fucking kill you!”

“No!” Grace’s legs finally moved and took her to Liv’s side. Carly hadn’t moved or tried to get away, and Grace suddenly realized her intent. “She wants you to hit her, Liv. Let her go. Please. It’s not worth it.”

“It’s totally worth it.” Liv released one hand to form a fist. She cocked her arm back to strike Carly, but Grace grabbed hold of her. She was stronger than Liv and used it to her advantage. She threw Liv off balance enough to make her let go of Carly.

Carly smiled at Grace. “You’re good. I didn’t expect you to stop her. I thought you’d want her to kick my ass.
