Aunt Sally Hendricks Sewing Room
At three-thirty Wednesday afternoon all the tennis courts were in use, the swimming pool area was full, and on the hills around Hendricks Plantation House people were walking and horseback riding.
The bar (Bobby-Joe Hendricks Lounge) was dark and empty except for some people from the Boston press keeping up their luncheon glow with gin and tonics.
And Walter March, Junior, sitting at the bar.
Fletch sat beside him and ordered a gin and bitter lemon from the bored, slow-moving barman.
At the sound of his voice, Juniorâs head turned slowly to look at him.
Juniorâs eyes were red-rimmed and glazed, his cheeks puffy, his mouth slack. A small vein in his temple was throbbing. He looked away, slowly, thought a moment, burped, and looked back at Fletch.
He said, âWilliam Morris Fletcher. I remember you.â
âIrwin Maurice Fletcher.â
âThaâs right. You used to work for us.â
âPractically everybody used to work for you.â
âFlesh. There used to be a joke about you. âAnd the Word was made Fletch.â â
âYeah.â
âThere were lots of jokes about you. You were a joke.â
Fletch paid the barman.
Walter March, Junior, said, âYou heard my fatherâs dead?â
âI heard something to that effect.â
âSomeone stabbed him.â Junior made a stabbing motion with his right hand, his eyes looking insane as he did it. âWith a scissors.â
Fletch said, âTough to take.â
âTough!â Junior snorted. âTough for him. Tough for March Newspapers. Tough for the whole mother-fuckinâ world.â
âTough for you.â
âYeah.â Junior blinked slowly. âTough for me. Tough darts. Isnât that what we used to say in school?â
âI donât know. I wasnât in school with you.â
There was a long, slow, blinking pause.
Junior said, âMy father hated you.â
Fletch said, âYour father hated everybody.â
Another three blinks.
âI hated you.â
âAnyone who hates me is probably right.â
âMy Jesus father thought you were night and day.â
Fletch sipped his drink. âWhat does that mean?â
Junior tried to look at Fletch in the proper executive fashion. âYou know, he wanted to make a thing with you. He loved your balls.â Juniorâs eyelids drooped. âHe wanted to bring you along, you know? Make something of you.â
âGee, and Iâm not even in journalism anymore. Just a hanger-on.â
âDo you remember his trying to frighten you once?â
âNo.â
âHe tried to scare you.â
âI donât remember it.â
âThaâs because you werenât frightened, shit. You remember the story about the Governorâs secretary?â
âYeah.â
âHe sent memos to you. Directly. Telling you to blow the story.â
âSure.â
âHe came to town. Sent for you in his office.â
âYeah.â
âScared the shit out of you.â
âDid he?â
âTold you youâd be fired if you wrote the story.â
âFive minutes in an office.â¦â
Juniorâs head swooped up toward Fletch. âYou wrote the fuckinâ story! And then quit!â
âYeah.â
There was a long pause, and two small burps.
âIt wasnât the Governor Dad cared about. Not the Governorâs secretary. Not the story.â This time Junior put the back of his hand to his burp. âIt was you.â
âThere was a long pause,â Irwin Maurice Fletcher said, âwhile Irwin Maurice Fletcher reacted.â
âYou donât get the point,â Junior said.
âI get the point,â Fletch said. âPeople are always shittinâ around, and Iâm me. I always get the point.
