CHAPTER SEVEN

Flora sipped her latte as she drove home. And the old house really had become home to her, though it had a very different feel from her apartment back in Chicago. The apartment had been a sanctuary, the perfect place to escape from her hectic life and both figuratively and literally be above it all. She missed some things about it, such as the wonderful view of Chicago from her windows, the endless hot water, and the perfect climate control. She missed being able to order food from any restaurant imaginable and have it delivered to her door in twenty minutes. She missed being able to walk anywhere she wanted, and even missed the weekly Friday night dinners with her family, though in practice they had frequently been a source of irritation to her.

The house was a different sort of sanctuary entirely. It wasn't the place she went to escape, because most of the time, she had nothing she wanted to escape from. She didn't need to desperately seize the moments of quiet in between her busy work and social activities. The house wasn't a refuge as much as her apartment had been. It was simply her place. It was a building she was growing to know like the back of her hand, imperfections and all. It was her hope for the future, and the location of a lot of happy evenings with her friends.

When she got back, she spent a little time inside, petting her cat while she finished her coffee and watched the news. Once her latte was gone, she changed into clothes she wouldn't mind getting paint on and went outside to start painting the back of her house. A glance at the lawn told her it would be time to mow again soon, but that would have to wait until tomorrow, after the paint had time to dry. The last thing she needed was to send dust and bits of freshly cut grass swirling into the air to get caught up in the wet paint on the house’s siding.

She had chosen to work on the back of the house since it would keep her out of view of the road, but her desire to continue avoiding Beth was in vain.

“There you are.”

Flora, who had been halfway up the ladder with a paintbrush in her hand, yelped and almost dropped it in an attempt to steady herself. She glowered down at the older woman, who was standing in her yard, looking up at her with one hand on her hip and the other holding onto her basset hound’s leash. Grumbling to herself, Flora made her way down the ladder and took her phone out of her pocket to pause the music that was playing.

“What do you want?”

“Don't be rude,” Beth snipped. “I know you're upset with me, but you can't avoid me forever. Aren’t we friends, Flora? I've only ever been kind to you.”

Flora sighed and dropped her paintbrush next to the can of paint. “Look, I think what you did to Natalie was cruel.
