Chapter 8

Six Weeks Later

“Are you coming snorkeling today, boss?”

Nursing a nasty hangover, Nick spared Joe no more than a glance before turning back to his computer. He grunted, “No,” emphatically conveying how little the suggestion appealed.

“You never come snorkeling anymore. Got something against fish now?”

Only that they reminded him of Sophie and how he had taught her all their names and usual hiding places. He’d never seen a woman so enamored by fish. “I got something against you sticking your nose in my business.”

“You got something against the sun and clean living too. You spend all your time drinking yourself stupid or working.”

“It’s called running a business, Joe.”

“Veronica says it’s called a broken heart.”

“You and Veronica talk too much.”

“It’s called being friendly. You should try it sometime. I’m taking the boat out.”

Nick grunted a goodbye, staring at the computer screen unseeingly. He hated doing all the paperwork and correspondence that went along with running this place, but everything else here reminded him of Sophie, of what he’d lost. He clicked the mouse and the numbers he’d been studying disappeared. He muttered a choice epithet.

“Have you ever thought of hiring someone to do your administration work?”

Nick looked up at the woman standing in the office door and gaped. He’d lost it. It couldn’t be her—he’d sent her away. And she was wearing red—a bright vermilion halter-neck dress that screamed daring. He’d never seen her wear red before.

Sophie. His sweet, adorable Sophie. He felt the blood course through him, felt alive for the first time since February. He’d thought he’d never see her again and the knowledge had been slowly killing him.

“Are you going to answer my question or have you gone mute since I left?” Sophie’s heart was lodged so firmly in her throat she was surprised she could talk at all, let alone sound so nonchalant. “Because I was thinking that I could help you with this sort of thing. I do have office skills, and as I’m out of a job now I could really use the money.”

“Ah… I uh…” Nick stammered. Abruptly he stood, knocking over a sheaf of papers that had been hanging over the edge of his cluttered desk in the process. The documents fell to the floor and scattered, unheeded. “Sophie…what the hell are you doing here?” he demanded finally. “You’re supposed to be in Wisconsin.”

“No,” she said quietly, regarding him with all the steady certainty she felt. “I’m supposed to be here. The past six weeks only proved to me what I already knew but that you were too stubborn to acknowledge. I belong here, with you.”

She stepped into the office and wandered over toward him with forcibly slow steps. It was all she could do not to bolt at him and climb all over him. She’d missed him so much—that face, that body. His flashing, audacious smile. The way he made the very air around him crackle with energy. The way he made her life seem more vibrant, more authentic. “It occurred to me that I always let you get your way in bed and perhaps you mistook that for a weak will.
