Seeing the fear in Evie’s eyes when she was talking to that man didn’t sit well with me. That bastard better hope I don’t ever see him again or his face is going to get well acquainted with my fists. I don’t know what was really going on, but Evie is a shit liar, so I know it was more than him just popping by. She was so upset by whatever he said or did that she was physically shaking. It took a while to get her to calm down and I didn’t want to leave her, but she obviously wanted some time to be alone.

Back at the house, I can’t stop myself from pacing around the living room, unable to settle myself down, when the others finally get back.

“Hey man, what’s going on?”

That’s kind of a loaded question. I don’t know if I should tell them what happened or not, but I decide if she wants to get mad at me for telling them she can, she never told me not to and the more people who know to look out for that creep the better.

“Have either of you heard from Evie this afternoon?” They both look at each other before looking back at me and I can tell they have the wrong idea. “Not about me you idiots. I interrupted what looked like a heated discussion between her and her old foster dad on campus today. She was pretty shaken up but wouldn’t give me any details on what happened.”

They both whip out their phones, but she hasn’t said anything to them. Oops. I explain what I saw then what she told me, and before they can get their panties in a twist about her being alone and upset, I let them know that I stayed with her until she was alright.

“I’m only telling you about this because we should all keep an eye out for him, his name is Marvin. He’s probably around forty-five to fifty if I had to guess, beer gut, already balding and looks like bad news.”

We all agree to let each other know if we think we see him hanging around and then they turn the conversation on me.

“Dude when are you going to stop standing in your own way already?” Beck asks before Gunnar joins in too.

“You obviously have feelings for her, and we all know she has feelings for you too so why are you holding back?”

They both know I’ve always struggled with commitment, that’s why I never actually date girls. I hook up and that’s it. Dating means letting someone in and if you let someone in, they hold the power to destroy you. I watched it with my parents, and I refuse to end up like my dad. If anyone could ever work their way into my heart it would be Evie.

“Why are you harping on this again? It’s my life and I can make my own decisions.” This isn’t the first time they’ve tried to convince me that I’m being pigheaded.
