Brooks, Nathan, and I clean the kitchen since Lucas did all the cooking. “You really don’t have to help,” Brooks says as I rinse the dishes so they can put them in the dishwasher.

“It’s fine. We don’t mind. We’re the ones crashing your Friday night.”

“Did you forget the part where I invited you?” Brooks laughs a little. “It’s fine. We usually trade off the cooking and cleaning, though Lu is a better cook than I am and can’t stack the dishwasher for shit.”

“I heard that!” Lucas calls out from where he’s wiping the table down.

“Wasn’t trying to be quiet!” Brooks replies.

Their back and forth has me shaking my head but it’s nice. It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything like this, and while I can’t call Brooks and Lucas friends, not yet, I’m happy to see it heading in that direction.

“Do you mind dropping us at the train?” I ask once everything is put away. “I don’t want to get back too late.”

“We can drive you home,” Brooks replies. “It’s no problem.”

“I don’t want to be an imposition and make you go back into the city.”

“Please, Cole,” they insist. “Trust me. I knew what I was doing when I invited you over. It’s no hardship to take you back home. This way, you can stay for longer, too. We have board games, though I highly advise you not to play with Lucas. He’s competitive.”

“Hey!” Lucas protests. “Who was it that got banned from playing Monopoly for life?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Brooks doesn’t bother hiding their grin.

“Right.” Lucas snorts. “Both Brooks and my sister are no longer allowed to play for reasons.”

Brooks sniffs. “Still think that’s unfair, but whatever, sore losers.”

“Better than a cheater,” Lucas shoots back. “We can watch a movie?” he suggests. “We have just about every streaming app there is. Or we can play cards.”

“Not poker,” Brooks says quickly. “Lucas cheats.”

“No, you’re just bad at it.”

“Oh, like how you’re bad at Monopoly?” Brooks turns to look at Lucas and the smile on their face is pure innocence.

Lucas glares at them before looking back to me. “If you really want to go home, we’ll take you, but you’re welcome to stay a little longer.”

I don’t bother looking at Nathan, already knowing he’s on board with this. I just sigh and nod. What could it hurt?
