Chapter
Twenty-Three
We have heard much about you, Justin.
Justin and Sera bowed their heads slightly, acknowledging the Master but not deferring power. Sera looked up at their host, curious. The Master of Rome was tall and regal in his bearing and dressed how she imagined the kings of old must have.
Long, flowing black robes were tied with a silver and gold belt.
Around his neck were rows of golden chains from which hung precious gems of diamonds, amethysts, and sapphires. His eyes were fully golden with red flecks, and his hair was a platinum blonde that could easily be called white. It was long and hung straight down his back, held away from his face with a fishtail braid, and secured with a diamond-encrusted clip. Solvo looked mostly human, though his skin was a tad too pale to be considered natural. Sera knew he had to be extremely old and powerful, just by the sheer amount of energy that radiated off him. She shook her head to clear her thoughts from distraction, realizing sheâd have to keep her guard up while here. He smirked at her, his dark lips and prominent cheekbones almost mocking.
Miss Serafina Thomas.
Sera bowed her head again, and her eyes fell to his shoes. He wore sandals made from golden threads, decorated with hundreds of minuscule diamonds. Even his nails were decorated with them!
Everything about this Master screamed strength and wealth. His power was tightly contained, though he allowed wisps to escape, letting anyone near him know just who they were dealing with. It didnât feel as powerful as Justinâs, but it was much more focused; a laser beam of intensity compared to the wide reach of the sun.
Master Solvo, your hospitality is most welcome. Our territory seeks your friendship and the brotherhood of its fellow demons. Justin put a hand to his chest, and Sera heard an appreciative mumble from the crowd of demons who had gathered.
Justin warned her that they took tradition very seriously in this part of Europe, and to expect it to be quite different from their trip to England. To that point, she was dressed in her St. Michaelâs uniform, rather than the more modern clothes she had worn elsewhere. In addition to her dress and boots, a long ornamental cloak designating her rank and position fluttered around her shoulders. Justinâs family pin winked at everyone in the torchlight, a warning, and a deterrent.
To match, Justin was dressed in heavy boots with dark pants, and a dark green shirt that hung open, partially exposing his chest. He wore a robe as well, but it wasnât as traditional as Solvoâs. His talisman hung around his neck as his only jewelry, but the power it radiated gave him enough attention from the surrounding crowd.
They werenât actually in Rome; Master Solvoâs main residence was in a large villa on the coast. Sera guessed it to be much older than St. Michaelâs. Most of the villa faced the ocean and had an open concept throughout with very few doors or actual windows.
