Chapter 17
My dad had shown up with Joshua to stay with Neeson in the hospital. Though he wasnât happy with the idea of me returning to my apartment, I insisted I was too tired to stay. Jared had disappeared, something he was good at, and I didnât want to stick around until someone found the blood in the elevator. So Luke returned me to the apartment, where he soon left to meet up with someone; my guess was Violet or Dr. Wineman. I was surprised he would leave me alone so quickly, considering what had happened the past few times. Maybe he really didnât care.
I took a quick shower, hoping the water would help clear my thoughts, but it only reminded me of my change. The water should have been burning me but I felt fine as it washed over my skin. If anything, I wanted it to be hotter. Carefully, I stepped out of the bathtub, eyeing the mark my skull had left on the counter. Luke hadnât mentioned it.
But as I looked at myself in the mirror, I found I was feeling better; about myself at least. The way my hair curled at the ends even when wet, how my skin sparkled with water under the lights, my droopy eyes wide and alertâ¦I loved it all, for the first time in my life.
Then I remembered that Dr. Wineman said dragons were narcissistic creatures, and I had to remind myself that I didnât normally feel this way. Butâ¦was it so wrong to take pride in my appearance? If we were able to change me backâ¦would I go back to how I was before?
I puffed the air out of my chest and flicked my wet hair to the right. It was longer than I remembered it being, and when I checked my nails, I found they had grown longer. I started to wonder if I would be able to control when my body changed, if I could make my eyes turn into slits and scales, and then return to normal. I leaned into the mirror, willed them to go into the other form; nothing happened.
Putting on a fresh pair of pale yellow shorts and a red tank top, I sat down on my bed and stared at my little silver box as the sun rose higher in the sky. It gave me a sense of being complete, and I sighed longingly as I watched it. It was too soon when Azazel began to nuzzle at my toes and roll over on the carpet around them. I nudged him away and left the room, shutting him behind the door as I went. He meowed once, but quickly gave up. Just as I put my hand on the television remote in the living room, I heard Kat shuffle his feet outside. I called to him, âYou can come in, itâs open.â
The latch clicked, the door creaking open slowly. I twisted my neck to watch Kat peek inside nervously.
âYouâre alone?â he questioned. Considering how Neeson had been whenever Kat was around, I didnât blame him.
