Chapter Eleven - Shift.

I hauled ass down the blacktop streets to the corner store, pushing my friendship with the local speed limit. My luck ran out when I saw the blue and red flashing lights reflecting off the nearby houses and heard the unmistakable wail of a patrol car’s siren. I sighed, I didn’t have time for this shit, my daughter needed me.

I pulled to the side, cut the growl of my Harley’s engine and slowly took my wallet from my back pocket. I didn’t want the cop to think I was reaching for a piece. The lights flashed behind me, I could have sworn I saw a curtain twitch in the house in front of where I’d pulled up.

The sound of boots against bitumen thumped rhythmically over the sound of the police car’s engine and the squawk of the dispatch radio reached my ears as the cop came to a stop beside me. He was a middle aged cop, the weary lines of a man who had seen far too much already were etched deeply into the corners of his eyes and the downturned set of his mouth.

“Do you know why I pulled you over this evening, Sir?” he asked, pulling out his ticket book. Fuck just what I needed while I was still on parole.

“Nope, can’t say I do, Officer.”

“You were riding a bit erratically on Dixon street, and you ran a stop sign back on Holmes. Is there any reason for that?”

“I’m in a bit of a hurry.” I handed my licence over to the cop. He glanced at it before returning his scrutinising gaze to my ride.

“Why is that?”

I felt the stress push past all sense of logic and reason and I began to talk.

“My daughter has a stomach bug, she’s been sick all night and my neighbor is looking after her. She told me to get some sports drinks from the convenience store down the road. I’ve only moved here recently. To be honest, I just got out of prison, Sir, and I’m trying to do right by my little girl. I’m a single parent, and hell, I’ve never even looked after my sister’s kids, let alone one of my own. I just don’t want her hurting, or sick, I just…”

“You just want to protect her, keep her safe from harm.” The cop nodded his understanding. “I get it, I got three of my own at home.” he smiled. “Look, I’ll cut you some slack and let you off with a warning this time, but next time, you might get a visit from your parole officer. Oh and you should have changed your shirt before you left home, there’s still a bit of upchuck on it.”

I looked down at my black shirt, the Harley one with the unfortunate bleach stains. Sure enough, there were spots and chunks of puke on the shirt.

“Dammit.” I muttered.

The cop grinned and handed my licence back.

“Ride safely, or you won’t get home to your little girl.” He turned away and returned to the patrol car.
