Chapter Nine

Wilma

I came up the steps and into the kitchen with my cheeks on fire. I’d flirted with him! Shamelessly! And he’d responded well, if I wasn’t mistaken. If this was what it was like to be courted, it was definitely an experience I wanted to explore further. I wanted to know how it felt to be adored. I wanted to build on this peculiar connection between us.

The problem? How could I know if this was real or not? And what would he think if he knew about my impairment? I’d decided to tell him first thing, but when he’d been so near to me and asked to kiss me, I forgot all about my good intentions. And then his kiss threw me for a most unexpected and tantalizing loop.

“Wilma! What happened?”

Zelda rushed to meet me and then pushed me into the bathroom off the kitchen and shut the door.

“What’s wrong?”

“Look!”

She turned me to face the mirror.

“Oh my Goddess!”

My lip had a swollen bump on it and the skin around it was losing color. A burning sensation tingled its way from my bottom lip to my chin and down my throat.

The sensation was painful, and growing in strength.

“What happened?”

“I…well…he kissed me.”

“This is from a kiss?”

“Well, it was enthusiastic, and he accidentally bit my lip.”

“With his fangs? Wilma! That’s dangerous! Here.”

Zelda closed her eyes and held her hand up in front of my face. She wiggled her fingers a few times and then she flicked them toward me. I felt a sting, and then the tingling stopped, thankfully.

“Whoo, that was close! You tell that boy to watch his fangs or you’re going to end up in trouble.”

“Trouble? You know it’s not possible for him to impregnate me through a kiss.”

Zelda scoffed. “I know that. Just because I didn’t go to a fancy magic school like you doesn’t mean I don’t know how babies are made.”

I flinched. “Zelda, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insinuate anything—”

“I know you didn’t. It’s just…I’ve been the head witch bitch around here for a while now, and then you come along and you’ve got all this magic. I’m a little intimidated by you, and I don’t like it one bit.”

“I don’t…I don’t know what to say. I don’t have magic.”

A puff of purple smoke and blue bubbles filled the bathroom, causing Zelda to sneeze like she was having a seizure. I coughed and accidentally sucked a few bubbles in, which was just like getting soap in the mouth. I should know. As a young witch, I’d had that very punishment several times.

“Oh, yes you do, Weather Girl.”

“Carol! What the…are you trying to suffocate us? You can’t spew that nasty shit in an enclosed space like this!” Zelda reached over and flipped the switch on the vent.

With three of us in the bathroom, it was indeed a small space.

“Relax,” she said. She waved her hand around and the smoke dissipated. “I sensed a disturbance in the forge.”

“You mean the Force?”

“Isn’t that what I said? Now, what’s happening?
