Meet The Folks

SEAN

Aida buckles her seat-belt and turns to me with a sweet, shy smile that hits me straight to the heart.

“So, where are we going?” She inquires.

“Brunch at my parents,” I answer, trying to hold n my smile when her eyes grow huge.

“Your-parents,” she stutters. “What do you mean, your parents? Shouldn’t we go grab a drink? Spend some time together, learn to know each other… Date? I don’t know, stuff like that.”

“Yeah, we’re doing all that. We’re also having brunch with my family.”

“Your family? I thought you said your parents.”

Aida’s entering full panic mode now. So I start the car, back out of her driveway and take the direction of my childhood home.

I lay my hand on her knee and squeeze reassuringly.

“We try to have a family gathering once a month, maybe. So that’s what’s happening today.”

I send her a quick look, paired with a grin. And I almost stop the car to kiss the shit out of her, because Miss Aida Dieng, shocked and tongue-tied, might just be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

“You’ll be fine, babe. They’re gonna love you.”

She blinks several times, staring at me with incredulity.

“I’ll be fine? They’re going to love me?”

She does air quotes when she says the word ‘love’. Oh shit.

“I’m not going to be fine meeting your entire family, Sean. At least not today.”

Aida pushes tendrils of curled locks from her forehead.

“Is this what you do? Bring girls home for your first date?”

It’s good we haven’t hit the highway yet, so I can park at the first safe spot. I undo Aida’s seat-belt without looking at her face, lift her from her spot and plant her in my lap. She’s so stunned, she doesn’t offer any resistance.

“What-what are you doing, O’Malley?” She sputters.

I frame her lovely face between my hands and lay a thick and heavy one on her delectable mouth. When I’m done kissing the crap out of Aida, I let the tip of my nose rest on hers.

“We are not wasting one more second, macushla. Today, I’m introducing my woman to my family. As soon as we get a chance, I’m meeting your folks. And we keep moving forward. Yeah?”

She nods, her big, caramel eyes wide with what looks like wonder. Her full lips slightly stretching into a smile.

“Now be a good girl and let me drive.”

I give her one last closed-mouth kiss and help her get back on the passenger side.

“What does that mean?” Aida asks once she’s safely buckled up.

“What?”

“What you called me.”

“Macushla? It means ‘my darling’ in Gaelic.”

She just shakes her head and I watch her lovely lips twitch with the ghost of a grin.

The rest of the ride is quiet. We send each other glances, our fingers threaded together, exchanging soft smiles. Aida’s expression still harbors a hint of shyness, but her eyes gleam with a blinding light of hope, love and happiness.

We’re sitting on my parents’ patio, at their massive farm table, surrounded by my brothers, their women, some uncles, aunts, cousins, and my parents, each at one end.
