CHAPTER 13

Max

I’ve wrapped up a meeting at the resort’s beachfront restaurant with my marketing team and I’m heading back to my suite when my phone pings. I check the screen and the message hollows out my stomach. After giving final instructions for our ad campaign to spread the word about the new streaming service, I reread the text from my mom.

Dad took a fall. Hit his head. We’re the hospital. The doctors ordered a CT scan.

Not good. I’ve been fighting her stubborn refusal to move out of that three-story mausoleum they call a home and downsize to a one level place for over a year.

But I can’t bring that up now. She needs support, not an I told you so moment. Do you want me to come to Covington?

It can wait until after your annual corporate party. Don’t want to send any negative signals to the BOD.

Frustration courses through me, fists me in the ribs. I’ve spent my entire life, especially since college, keeping up appearances. Hell, I’m surprised she brought him to the local hospital instead of air lifting him to a private place where no one can possibly learn our family secret.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Keep me posted. If you need me, I’ll take the corporate jet to Covington. I send the text and punch in my floor number and enter the elevator when it arrives.

The party is a day away and a shit ton has happened since Ronni and I got to Aruba. We’ve made the most of our time here, and I’m confident she’ll agree to work with Chandler Media, but she still hasn’t committed.

As I enter my resort’s suite, my heart beats faster with anticipation when I see Ronni on the living area’s couch with her feet propped up on the round coffee table in front of her.

She looks up from the paperback she’s reading and smiles. “You’re back earlier than I expected. Everything go all right at the meeting?” she asks when she reads my frowning face.

I tunnel my fingers through my hair. “Meeting went great, but my mom texted and my dad’s in the hospital.”

“Oh no.” She stands, walks over to me and wraps her arms around me. “I’m sorry. Do you have to go to Covington?”

I take a deep breath, inhale her scent and draw comfort from her embrace, her instant concern something I could get used to having every day. All the time. “Mom wants me to stay here until after the party.”

She strokes my back, easing the tension in my knotted muscles with every caress. “In other words, she doesn’t want anything to create problems for Chandler Media’s stock portfolio.”

“Yes. And I’m willing to support that for now.”

“Anything I can do to take your mind off your troubles?” she asks, sliding her hands over my ass and tugging me close.

“Oh, I can think of a few things,” I say as her touch makes all thoughts of discussing business, my family situation, and the series evaporate. “

Ronni arches an eyebrow.
