Everyone smiled and clapped politely as they eyeballed the delicious food. Music from the orchestra began playing, and everyone flocked to the buffet table. It was shortly after everyone had filled their plates and sat down that a few of them thought they heard the faint sound of sleigh bells. Thinking that it was just part of the party, they continued on with dinner.
A moment later, there came a knock at the massive front door.
Cinderella turned to Harold, who was stuffing his mouth with a succulent turkey leg.
âAre we expecting anyone else?â she asked.
His eyebrows furrowed and he shook his head as he swallowed. âNo, mâlady. Everyone on the invite list has arrived.â
Cinderella looked confused. âGo let them in!â
Harold jumped up from the table and raced out of the room. When the rest of the guests heard that someone was at the door, they all pushed away from the table and joined Cinderella at the bottom of the large gilded staircase.
Much to their surprise, it was Santa Claus who stepped in when the massive doors opened.
Cinderellaâs jaw dropped open. âSanta! What are you doing here? Itâs Christmas Eve!â
âHo ho ho! Merry Christmas Eve, fairy-tale friends. I know itâs late, and I canât stay long, but thank you so much for inviting me. Iâm thrilled, and of course, Iâve brought presents.â And out of the large red sack heâd brought from the North Pole, a pile of brightly wrapped gifts appeared, each labeled with the name of someone in attendance. The group oohed and aahed.
Cinderella pressed her hands to her cheeks and said, âThat is so very kind of you, Santa. We know youâre so busy. Did you say you had an invitation?â She looked over at Harold, who discreetly shook his head.
âYes, of course,â Santa replied as he pulled the fake invitation from his pocket. âPlease, let me tell you all how grateful I am for the new super-duper reindeer hybrid sleigh. Itâs almost like you knew exactly what I needed this year. You see, Iâm giving a toy to every girl and boy in the world, and my old sleigh just canât handle that kind of volume. I canât tell you how much this gift means to me and the elves. It is truly a blessing!â
Prince Charming joined Cinderella, and a confused look passed between them as a surprised silence settled over the palace. Near the back of the crowd, an awkward cough or two echoed off the ceiling. Somewhere off to the side, a cricket chirped.
âHush,â Pinocchio whispered loudly. âNobody knows why heâs here.â
Cinderella stepped forward and took Santaâs hands in her own. âSanta, weâre so happy you joined us, but I donât remember sending you an invitation. Youâre welcome to stay, of course, but we figured youâd be busy, what with it being Christmas Eve and all . . .â
Santa laughed and his belly jiggled like a bowl full of jelly. âYou are so right, my dear. It wasnât just an invitation. It was a singing telegram. And a funny-looking one at that.
