JUST TONIGHT

Samantha Reid glanced at her watch impatiently. A little rainwater slipped down the back of her neck and she shook her head. She had been fifteen minutes standing in front of her building, and still no taxi. At any other time, there would have been a dozen taxis lined up waiting for customers, but not when she was in a hurry. Today, taxis were scarce and some even seemed to be avoiding her.

Probably it was the rain. The sky had grown darker in the last few minutes and though it was still only a slow rain, it looked scary. Another taxi passed without the driver even looking her way

“I bet if I was a blonde in a skirt barely covering my ass,” she said to herself. “A cab would stop soon enough.”

She glanced at her watch again, a very expensive gift from Paul. It only added to her irritation. She was already late. By now she was supposed to be sitting down with her boyfriend Paul at the exclusive La Manx restaurant where reservations were almost impossible to get.

Another taxi passed.

“Damn, damn, damn,” she said softly.

Of course, Paul would be understanding. He always was. He was ten years older than she was, thoughtful and sensitive. He would nod when she told him her supervisor had wanted to meet with everyone that evening for fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes. It had turned into forty-five minutes and she had already changed into her evening clothes. She had dared a dress that that showed deep cleavage and her pig of a supervisor spent a lot of time trying to look down the front.

She suspected he kept her even longer than planned because he was enjoying the view.

On this night of all nights, she thought irritably. This was the night Paul was going to pop the question. She was certain. So were her friends and family. She had even started making lists. Bridesmaids, caterers, and places they could hold the reception. She wrote everything down in neat little columns because it was the way her mind worked. Neat and precise. It was what made her such a good editor.

Paul had been hinting around at it for weeks. Paul was not the type to do anything without thinking it through carefully, and he would not be spending a lot of money at a restaurant like La Manx unless it was a special night.

A special night she was going to miss if she couldn’t find a taxi.

Again, she wished she was tall, leggy blond. Paul often called her beautiful, but she knew she wasn’t. She had mousy brown hair and she thought her mouth did not fit her face. Because she had grown tall very quickly, she had a self-conscious way of slumping her shoulders. And as if to make up for not having a perfect face, her body was curvaceous, with large breasts, flat tummy, and shapely bottom.

A sexy body and a plain face had made her something of a joke growing up. Ugly, hurtful things were said about covering her head with a paper bag.
