CHAPTER 11
We made our way down the slope, careful not to repeat our slide from the other day. Maggie grew more and more tense as we neared the bottom. Our dragon was still standing there, and none of us knew for sure that he wouldnât hurt us. Then, as if he understood, he backed away as we finished our descent. He kept his distance from us as we approached the river. The small Apatosaurus disappeared under the water before we got too close, and the large one next to it seemed to freeze, never taking its eyes off of us. We had to crane our necks all the way back and then take some steps backward just to see the head of this creature. It finished chewing whatever was in its mouth and hissed at us one time. Its hiss was different from the dragonâs. The dragonâs had more of a rumble to it while the sauropodâs was throatier and high pitched. I elbowed Maggie as it began walking toward the middle of the river. She quickly turned the camera back on and filmed the dinosaur as it sank deeper into the water, eventually submerging completely.
We heard a hiss from behind us and turned to see another dragon perched in a tree high above us. It hissed again when we looked and spread its wings to glide to the ground not far from where we stood. He looked exactly like our dragon, except he had a long scar running from the top of his head to his mouth and a big chunk missing from his tail. Suddenly we heard an ominous sound. The boiling rumble we had become so familiar with. But before the fire appeared, our dragon stepped in front of us, dropped down to all fours, and let out a ferocious hiss at the other dragon. The scarred one spit a tongue of fire at our dragon who hissed again and began to rumble himself. Now, they were both down on all fours, but our dragon was pushing the other one back, away from us.
âLetâs throw something at it or something, help him out,â Rory whispered.
âDonât you dare move,â I ordered through my teeth.
Our dragon lunged at the other one and swiped the side of its face with his front claw. The scarred one let out a long, angry hiss after that, but soon began to back down and scurried up a tree farther away from us. Our dragon spun around, still on all fours, as if to warn any of the others to stay back.
âWhy is he doing this?â Maggie whispered.
I thought about it for a minute. Obviously, this dragon was not planning to hurt us. It had plenty of opportunities before now to do it, and now it was protecting us from the others. And it was frightening to realize that the only reason it protected me and Rory was because of Maggie.
âWell, I think you were right when you said it understood us,â I answered. âHe must think you can help them.
