‘Oh dear, I hope he didn’t eat anything valuable?’ Percie’s mother asked. ‘Of course, we’ll pay for any damage. It would have broken Percie’s heart if anything had happened to him. We can never thank you enough.’

‘It was my pleasure,’ Jai said, extricating himself with some difficulty. ‘He seems like a … a very nice otter and I’m glad I could be of service.’

‘Come in, come in. I’m Percie’s mother, by the way. You can all call me Meg.’

Jai started to protest, but she carried on, ‘I know you’re in a hurry – Percie told me. So we’ll just do five courses for tea rather than the usual seven—’

Jai dug his heels in. ‘That’s very kind, but we absolutely cannot stay,’ he said. ‘I’m sorry, but we’re on a very important mission and have already lost time by stopping here. I’m glad Percie is all right, but we really must be going.’

Meg sighed. ‘Oh dear. Well, if you’ve got to go, then you’ve got to go. At least let me call Percie to say goodbye?’

The little witch appeared behind her mother, then grabbed Jai’s arm and practically dragged him over the threshold, into the sunken ship.

‘Percie, I’ve already told your mother that we can’t stay for tea—’ Jai began.

‘I’m not asking you in for tea!’ Percie gasped. ‘I’m trying to hide you from the smugglers. Scarlett Sauvage has put a bounty on your heads. The posters have just gone up. Now every person on this island is looking for you!’
