“Okay,” I said carefully. “Well, now you’re just completely bullshitting me.”

The man blinked at me, confused, and maybe a little crestfallen that I wasn’t so impressed. He stuck his hands out to either side, a sort of sad, flourishing “Ta-da” as he gave me an even brighter smile than before. Literally brighter, that is, faint golden light sparkling from his perfect teeth as he grinned.

“But,” he said stiltedly. “Me. A god. Look.”

I pulled myself up off the ground, dusting off the seat of my pants, brushing blades of grass off my jacket. “I don’t care who or what the hell you are,” I snarled. “What is this, did everyone in the supernatural world get some kind of notification when I awakened? Is there an app for this? God. Stop following me. All of you.”

But follow me he did, his sandals brushing against the ground and audibly flip-flopping against the soles of his feet as he walked. “First of all, it’s called the arcane underground, and we’re all in it. That’s our community – entities, gods, angels, demons, supernaturals, the works.”

Without stopping, I turned my head over my shoulder and glared at him. “Exactly what part of ‘I don’t care’ did you misunderstand? I’m done with all of you people tracking me down and showing up all over the place.”

He raised a finger as he traipsed after me. “But I saved you. All those vampires. Cut me some slack, kid.”

“No. Don’t care. I’m done with this. I’m gonna go break into some place, steal something, find enough money to get a bus ride out of this shitty town, and then – ”

And then a blinding light stopped me dead in my tracks, along with an ominous rumbling. My heart trembled at the sound of what could have been a dragon, the thing obstructing me blazing with the same golden light as this man who claimed to be the Greek god of the sun.

Did Apollo even keep dragons? What the hell was this thing? It roared again, its light glowing ever brighter. I shielded my eyes, reaching out silently to the Vestments for the biggest, baddest bashing thing they had stocked up in heaven’s armories, then hesitating when I remembered that I would probably only get another electric jolt.

“Down, girl,” said the man behind me. “Sit. Stay.”

My shoes scraped over stone as I backpedalled out of the searing beam of light trained on me. I blinked hard, twice, thrice, washing the blindness out of my vision so I could focus on the monster Apollo had summoned. I blinked one more time, then rubbed my eyes in disbelief.

“Oh, come on. A car? What the hell is this?”

Apollo stepped over to the huge golden convertible, patting it on its hood and beaming at me. The car’s rumbling went down to a low murmur, almost like a cat purring. Its high beams turned themselves down as well, maintaining a more tolerable, headlight level of illumination. I had the weirdest feeling that I wasn’t out of the woods yet, though, as far as it came to sentient cars.
