7.2.2 Discriminative Stimulus Properties of Music

The discriminative stimulus property of music has been reported in various nonhuman animals. Music discrimination is a kind of category discrimination for humans. For example, we can discriminate music by Bach from music by Stravinsky or, even more easily, discriminate classical music from modern music. Such discrimination does not depend on particular pieces or musical instruments. Bach’s works for organ and those for violin can be classified as one category: namely, Bach’s music. Therefore, music discrimination is based on complex sensory processing rather than lower-level processing of sounds.
