Once all the students have finished their sheets and moved on to the next activity, it only takes me a few minutes to walk around the room and check what they have done. At that point, I am able to praise students for reaching a difficult goal, offer encouragement to those who didn’t reach their goals, provide feedback, make suggestions, and hold students accountable for assessing themselves honestly and accurately. More important, however, than whether students reach a goal for a given week, is the fact that we, as teachers, are empowering children by helping them develop their judgment, better their reflective thinking skills, and improve their ability to chart their own path.
