Chapter Eight

JOSHUA TRIED TO PLAY , but the song sounded dreadful. He stopped and put his violin back in the velvet lined case. It wasn’t much wonder that his music sounded as wretched as he felt. If he played one of the hundreds of pieces from other composers, he could make it passable, but his own compositions would echo his emotional state.

“Playing from the heart has its drawbacks.” Joshua left the upper room to return to the kitchen. He made tea. Not that he wanted any, just that it gave him something to do other than ruminate.

Just as the kettle began to whistle, the doorbell rang.

Knowing the way the exclusive neighborhood worked, Joshua didn’t have to stretch his brain to figure out it had to be a neighbor at the door. The guards didn’t let anyone in the gated community without warning the homeowner. Of course, that didn’t apply to people who already lived here. Come to think of it, he couldn’t ever remember one of the neighbors just popping by. They always called. Or texted. No one showed up unannounced. Apparently, dragons didn’t have the same rigid manners.

Joshua turned off the stove and moved the kettle aside before hurrying to the door. He opened it and said, “Hello, Dakker.”

“How did you know it was me?”

“Who else would be at my door?”

“I don’t know.”

“Come in.” Joshua stepped back and held the door open wider. “You’re human, aren’t you?”

“I’m in my human form, yes.”

“Are you going to change again?” Joshua closed the door.

“Not for a few hours.”

“Come into the kitchen. I’m making tea.”

“I’d like some.”

Joshua could have said he was only making tea for himself, but he decided the antagonistic shtick wasn’t getting him what he wanted. Instead, he asked, “Do you want the one you had before or would you like to try a new one?”

“I’d like to try a new one, please.”

“I’m a creature of habit, myself.” Joshua took down the other cup then touched the labels on the tea he’d brought. “I think you’ll like this one. It’s got quite a bit of citrus.”

“Sounds good.”

Joshua heard him put something down on the counter top. “Did you bring something?”

“Some food. You said you didn’t have any.”

“I could always go to the store.”

“You don’t have a car.”

“How do you know?”

“How would you drive it?”

“Right.” Joshua laughed. “I could call for a car.”

“Do you want me to take everything back?”

“No.”

“Then why are you arguing with me?”

“I don’t know.” Frankly, it had just become a habit. “Let’s move on.” Joshua added tea to the infusers. “Why are you here? I thought I made myself pretty clear when I left your house a few hours ago.”

“You did.” Dakker took a deep breath then said, “Only, I’ve decided to take you up on your offer.”

“My offer?” Joshua asked.

“Just sex for three days and nights.”

Joshua fumbled with the tea infuser but recovered, hopefully before Dakker noticed. “Is that what I offered?”

“I thought that’s what you wanted.” Dakker placed his hand low on Joshua’s back, discombobulating him and making him feel strong at the same time.
