WHEN I WALKED into the living room the next morning, I found freshly baked muffins and a bowl of fruit on the table. I went into the cold cellar and brought out the butter and a jug of cold water. Just as I sat down to eat, Ryan knocked and walked in.

“Hi, Ryan. If you haven’t eaten already, join me. I think Arlynn is deliberately trying to fatten me up.”

He grinned and sat down with me, helping himself to a muffin. “I was wonderin’ if you wanted some trainin’ this morning. I’ll be glad to help you if you’d like.”

I wasn’t sure how to answer him. “Ryan, I’ve really been on the fence about more training. After what happened to us, I haven’t been sure I want to continue training. Do you think there’s a way to learn how to defend myself without killing anyone?”

I could see the understanding in his eyes as he thought about it. “Well, from a distance, you could always choose to aim for arms or legs, rather than the heart or any of the other more vulnerable spots. But close up, the way you had to fight when we were attacked? In that case, you just have to hit whatever you can reach. I don’t think you could have fought him off any other way, lass.”

When I thought about what he said, I had to agree. I wondered what Adam had been thinking.

“Ryan, you’re probably right. But I promised Gabe that I’d paint a few targets for him, so that’s what I’d like to do this morning. Do you know where I can find some paints?”

“Sure, I can get a few cans of paint for you. What colors do you want?”

I gave him a list and after eating one more muffin, he took an apple with him and left on a paint search. “I’ll meet you at the practice field in half an hour, lass.”

I made myself a cup of tea, hoping to quiet my nerves; then I cleaned up the breakfast crumbs, grabbed my messenger bag and left the cottage. Maybe painting some targets would put the memory of what I’d done out of my mind.

Ian must have been waiting for me, because as soon as I’d cleared the doorway, he was across the road like a shot. “Cara, Cara, will there be more drawing today?” he asked, smiling hopefully. Ian was a ray of sunshine today, and that was exactly what I needed.

“Well, this morning, Ian, I’m going to be painting targets at the practice field. Would you like to come?”

I looked across the road and saw his mother running over to us. She said, “I hope Ian isn’t annoying you, Cara.”

“Not at all,” I said. “He’s good company. Besides, I think he’ll really enjoy what I’m doing this morning.” I looked at Ian. “We’re going to paint scary pictures on a couple of the targets that the children use. Would you like to help me?”

Ian looked up at his mom. “Mama, I want to help Cara.
