Jo groaned in agonized defeat, horribly and helplessly touched.

“Were you this stubborn in your first life?” she whispered.

She felt him smile against her.

“Yes.”

Another groan filled her, and she wanted nothing more than to burrow more deeply into his arms and hide. But nothing had changed. Whatever he had done for her, whatever she felt…

“Is there nothing I can say to convince you? Just to let Adam and Christopher know? Let me write them a letter. An email. Call them. Anything.”

“If I knew how to do it without risking you, I would.” He stroked her hair back from her face, his hands so very soft on her skin. “But I can’t leave you alone. You keep hurting yourself. And I can’t take you with me. You wouldn’t be able to stop yourself from trying to get away, and with people around and the laws of this age, it might work.”

“Oh, the good old days when you could abduct a woman with impunity,” she said, a hint of bitterness in her tone.

“I am sorry, Dulcissima,” he whispered.

She was silent for a moment.

“You never say my name.”

He hesitated before answering.

“I never knew it before,” he said carefully. “So I…thought of you with other names.”

“Dulcissima?” Sweetest.

“That…was a term of endearment from my time I just…it slipped out. But I didn’t think of you that way before.”

“But you do now?” she whispered.

His voice was husky as he answered.

“I shouldn’t.”

No, he shouldn’t. And she shouldn’t like it.

Her options were rapidly disappearing, and time was running out.

Guilt crushed her. Petrus had saved her. So many times. And he was trying so hard to help her, no matter how misguided his methods. But Adam and Christopher had saved her, too. What they had all built together…she belonged to them—as much as they belonged to her.

And she would never stop fighting for them.

“Let’s test your theories,” she said.

“How?”

“You said my soul was being torn from me because I was holding onto something bad for me: Christopher and Adam. So…okay. I’m not with them now. Let me sleep and see if I can wake up on my own.”

He pushed himself up on his forearms to frown down at her.

“First, that is a highly risky test. And second,” he continued, stopping her lips with his fingertips. “You are still holding onto them. It’s only circumstances keeping you from them.”

Fuck. Even if she had months, she didn’t think she would ever be able to convince him she had let go of them. And she didn’t have months. If Christopher thought she was dead, Jo had no idea what he might do. Or perhaps too many ideas.

She clamped down on the fear. Focus. Everything hinged on convincing Petrus to do what she asked.

“It’s not that risky. You were able to bring me back once you had more time. Well, you have all the time in the world here. And I won’t have been in a coma for months—just asleep for a few hours.”

His frown deepened.

“Minutes at the most.”

“Then you’ll consider it!” she said breathlessly, hope surging.
