Chapter 7

Joe woke early on Sunday morning and left Chrissie sleeping while he made coffee. Ava’s car still wasn’t back in her drive. He wondered who she was with.

Joe sipped his coffee and read the news on his phone. Though still warmed by a blanket of contentment following last night’s lovemaking, he couldn’t get his mind off their conversation. Chrissie had refused to see any significance in the fact that they’d both had almost identical dreams on at least two occasions. Obviously he wasn’t going to follow up by asking if she’d also dreamt about Ava sucking him off while Chrissie fucked her from behind using a strap-on.

“Morning.” Chrissie stood in the doorway wearing her robe.

“Hiya. Fancy a coffee?”

“Hmm. And maybe some toast.”

Joe went to make her breakfast while she sat at the table. “Sleep okay?” he asked with a smug smile.

“Eventually.”

“Any other sleepy trysts you want to tell me about?”

“No, not last night. You?”

Joe shook his head. “Not that I can remember.”

“Do you need to do any preparation for your Oxford trip?”

“Nope. I’ll be in the office tomorrow morning, so I can do whatever’s needed before driving down.”

“In that case, how about we go out somewhere for the day and make the most of the weather?”

“Sounds good.”

An hour later they left for the Peak District again. This time they chose a longer route and spent over three hours walking while chatting about nothing in particular. Neither of them mentioned dreams, Ava or the upturn in their sex life. After a late pub lunch, they drove home and rested their weary legs.

Chrissie announced she was going to have a bath before turning in, so Joe took the bin down to the kerb, packed himself an overnight bag for his Oxford trip, then sat in bed with his book. Before he’d read a single chapter, he realised he was too tired. As soon as his head hit the pillow, he fell fast asleep.

The sound of birdsong woke him. He glanced around the bedroom, then pinched himself to make sure he was really awake. Chrissie was fast asleep at his side. It was just before six. Closing his eyes again, he tried to remember any dreams from the previous night. Nothing came to mind, nor was there any evidence of nocturnal emissions inside his boxers. Apparently he’d slept soundly and chastely. He lay there for another twenty minutes before taking a shower.

Chrissie joined him for breakfast half an hour later. “Ready for your trip?” she asked, pouring herself a glass of orange juice.

“Yep. Bag’s packed and my brain’s in statistician mode.”

“God, poor them.”

He chuckled. “What about you regarding getting to the station and back?”

“Didn’t I mention? I’ve arranged to work from home today and tomorrow.”

“Cool. If you mentioned it, I obviously wasn’t listening.”

“As usual.”

Joe pulled on his jacket, gave her a kiss then picked up his overnight bag and laptop. “Right, I’ll phone to let you know when I get to Oxford.”

“Okay. Drive safe, and don’t bore them to death with stats-speak.”

He laughed and headed outside, past Ava’s car.
