Chapter 8

MYRA FELT TEARS STINGING her eyes. She called out Kassy and Drew’s name but there was no reply.

She blinked the tears away and said out loud, “Come on Myra, you can’t just stand here crying. Think about what happened last time. You rescued everyone last time and you can do it again!”

When she’d helped the pirates previously, she had found a hidden lagoon in a cave. She had taken a boat across the lagoon and then walked through a green door at the other side. On the other side of the door was a corridor which led into an enormous hall. Inside the hall were rows and rows of tall grey towers. Just like the tower that had appeared in front of her a minute ago. She had found the pirates and Kassy in one of the towers. She had managed to persuade everyone to get out of the tower.

She spoke to herself again, “That’s all you have to do. Just find a lagoon, a boat, the green door and then you’ll soon be in the right place. And don’t worry about that nasty, evil witch who’s probably watching you right at this very minute.” Myra gulped and quickly looked left and right, expecting to see an evil pair of eyes staring back at her.

Now, where was she going to find a lagoon in this forest? Maybe it wouldn’t be a lagoon this time, it could be a stream or a river.

Myra began to explore the forest, listening out for any signs of water. She had been walking for ten minutes when she finally heard a tinkling sound. She walked over to where the sound was coming from. The tinkling sound was soon replaced with the sound of gushing water.

Myra stopped when she came to a wide river. The water rushed in front of her at great speed. She looked across the river and her heartbeat sped up when she saw a green door. It was standing on its own without any kind of support. It looked exactly like the green door she’d seen at the lagoon.

All she had to do now was cross this fast-flowing river without being swept away.

She walked a bit further down and saw a few boulders scattered across the width of the river. She examined them for a moment and wondered if she could use them as stepping stones. There was only one way to find out.

She stretched her leg out and stepped on the first boulder. It wobbled slightly but she didn’t fall off. She ignored the water that was rushing between the boulders and concentrated on keeping her balance.

One step at a time.

Myra held her hands out to help steady herself as she crossed the river. She had to leap from the last boulder to the riverbank. Her foot slipped and went into the icy water. She quickly pulled it out in case she got caught in the current.

She gave her foot a quick shake and then ran over to the green door.
