Dorothy had enjoyed a very late night with Marty and, as a result, was later than usual going downstairs on Sunday morning. They had attended a fortieth birthday party at the home of one of his former college pals, which had been great fun, and afterwards returned to Marty’s apartment to continue the frolics.

Alas, they had imbibed so much alcohol that, while both were willing, neither was able to successfully perform. Dorothy because she kept laughing and recounting jokes she had heard at the party, and Marty because he simply couldn’t.

Rather than this creating a rift between the couple, they laughed merrily over their lack of performance before agreeing that one large glass of water followed by a long sleep was the order of the evening. At least of what remained of it.

Dorothy waited until Marty was sound asleep, which had taken precisely two minutes, then crept out of bed and dressed in the bathroom. A discreet Lilli escorted her home at two in the morning. She snuck into her room unobserved, or so she assumed, in order to spend a few hours recuperating in the heat of the waterbed. She smiled fondly at the memory as she slowly descended the staircase. Marty was so much fun and so tolerant and easy going. She really loved that about him.

Dorothy paused midway down the stairs to consider the possibility further. Did she in fact love Marty Lovegood? Was she in love with Mar-Lo? Motionless on the glass step, she tried to picture herself living in an apartment with him. She tried to imagine picking up a shirt for him while shopping, because it would be a good colour, or because he would look sexy in it. She closed her eyes and saw herself waiting up for him to get home from the studio on a Friday night, so she could tell him how well the show had gone and ask him if he was hungry. She had difficulty summoning the required images, and decided to try something completely different.

She tried to picture the two of them off in some exotic location, lying on the beach, or swimming in crystal clear waters, or possibly even sipping a cocktail. That was no good, so she tried to think of something very mundane. She imagined them in a supermarket with a giant cart and list of groceries, chatting companionably as they chose the selected items, disputing the merits of apples versus oranges, or two-ply toilet paper versus quilted.

She grunted with irritation and opened her eyes. Perhaps it was fault of the hangover, but for the life of her, she was unable to visualise Dorothy and Marty, the future, normal happy couple. She would have to put the whole love question on the back burner until she was feeling more like her usual self.

Besides, although he had hinted at it on more
