Even in her slightly befuddled state, Dorothy had the presence of mind to pick up her tote bag. Jack gestured for the two women to precede him up the first flight of stairs. Orla was only too glad to lead the way and began to ascend, her legs moving rapidly in her brown pants as if she could not wait to get back to her office.
Dorothy pulled herself together and followed the girl up the tatty stairway. She was acutely aware of Jackâs presence as he climbed the steps in her wake. She instinctively knew if he had been alone, he would have run upstairs, taking two treads at a time. As things stood, he was forced to slow his pace to accommodate the women in their heels.
As Dorothy wended her way steadily upwards in her Radley Beacontrees, she hoped Jackâs nose had somehow led him astray and the blousing malarkey had been in vain. She was not exactly without blame herself, what with her bad feeling and sense of impending something or other.
Perhaps DSS fully intended to offer him sponsorship. It was highly unlikely they were operating an illegal debt collection business that used oversized thugs to intimidate folks who were up to their necks in hock. Perhaps the whole thing was a giant misunderstanding. When all was said and done, Jack was only attending for an interview.
So what if the place had a slightly odd feel to it and the building was a tad neglected? This did not necessarily indicate she was about to ask the wrong company for help. It was reasonable to assume that, apart from the administration staff, very few employees would be office-based. They would all be out minding doors in clubs, controlling crowds at festivals, patrolling premises, apprehending shoplifters, or possibly even protecting VIPs and lottery winners. That might be the reason the premises had become a little rundown.
The staff members were no doubt way too busy protecting the nation to have time to worry about a couple of metres of threadbare carpet and a few blown light bulbs. Dorothy sternly told herself to stop stressing and go with the flow. There would be plenty of time to form an opinion after she had met more members of the DSS team. Never mind Jack Maddox and his fecking nose that may or may not have been broken at some point in the past.
At the top of the stairs, Orla stopped and pulled open a dark brown door. Jack caught it over Dorothyâs head and held it ajar so she could walk through. She took three strides into the room and he took one. They ended up in pretty much the same spot, with Jack coming to rest a fraction behind her.
A large, open-plan office stretched out in front of them, although it was difficult to appreciate the physical space because of the blazing row that was in full progress. Maybe there was a lull in the shouting as we came up the stairs, and thatâs why we didnât hear them.
