Of course, in any mystery, the resolution is all-important, and in this case it is completely botched. The story ends leaving the viewer wondering what all the fuss was about. One of the casualties of the final two episodes is Mel’s character, which is markedly different from how it was established on screen in parts nine to twelve.

While a fourteen-part story was a brave and ambitious project to undertake, and while the production team should be praised for attempting something previously untried on this scale, The Trial of a Time Lord ultimately failed due to a collision of circumstances largely outside the control of those in charge. Yet another wasted opportunity. (7/10)
