DO NOT PANIC THE PIXIES

The campsite was almost silent as the girls tiptoed quietly into the forest.

‘We’ll be in so much trouble if anyone catches us,’ Portia whispered.

‘They won’t,’ Grace said as they headed deeper into the woods. ‘Forest Market, here we come!’

‘And you’re sure this friend of yours will help me?’ Mondo said quietly, ducking to avoid a branch. ‘I mean, I never even met her.’

‘Of course she’ll help,’ Grace said confidently. ‘Verity’s great.’

‘Her spells have been a little unreliable in the past,’ Portia added truthfully. ‘But she’s been practising a lot, and she’s definitely getting better.’

Mondo gulped.

‘You’ll be fine,’ Grace said, striding fearlessly along the moonlit path. ‘Besides, it’s worth the risk.’

‘I suppose …’ said Mondo doubtfully.

‘The market’s closer than I thought,’ said Portia. ‘I see the lights ahead!’

‘We’ll be back at Questival before anyone notices we’re gone,’ said Grace happily. ‘And then no one will notice Mondo at all.’

Most of the market stalls had already closed for the night, but the Merriwinkles’ cauldron was still bubbling away.

‘What are you two doing out so late?’ asked Verity as the girls approached. ‘I thought you were meant to be camping?’

‘We are,’ Grace said. ‘Our friend just needs a quick favour. Verity, meet Mondo Colossa!’

‘She’s being plagued by pixies,’ Portia added. ‘It’s ruining her Questival.’

‘Nice to meet you,’ said Mondo, peeping shyly out from between the girls.

Verity shook Mondo’s huge hand in her wrinkly green ones. ‘Nice to meet you, too,’ she said. ‘But I don’t see any pixies?’

‘They’re asleep right now,’ Mondo said, blushing. ‘But they’re a MAHOOSIVE nuisance whenever they’re awake.’

‘I can well believe it,’ Verity said seriously. ‘Pixies get right up my schnoz!’

The young witch tapped her nose with a crooked green finger. Her pet spider dropped out of it on a single, delicate thread. Verity sniffed him back up. ‘So, what exactly can I do to help?’

‘We’re hoping you might be able to turn me a TEENSY bit COMPLETELY invisible?’ Mondo said.

‘If the pixies can’t see Mondo, we figure they’ll pipe down and leave her alone,’ Portia explained.

‘She’s not enjoying the attention,’ Grace said. ‘But she deserves to enjoy Questival.’

‘Fair enough,’ Verity said, turning her face up to meet Mondo’s. ‘But if we turn you invisible, no one else will be able to see you, either. Won’t that make questing pointless? I mean, isn’t Questival all about showing off your skills?’

Mondo sighed. ‘That’s what Mum says, too!’

Grace shook her head firmly. ‘Questival’s about learning new skills, having fun, working together and making new friends.’

Mondo beamed down at her. ‘Sounds MEGA!’

‘If you say so,’ said Verity. ‘But how will you do all that if no one knows you’re there?’

‘We’ll make sure the other knights and trolls know Mondo’s still around,’ Portia explained. ‘We’ll just keep her a secret from the pixies.’

Verity shrugged. ‘I guess I can brew something up, but first I need to clean my cauldron – I just finished giving a Wonderworm magic legs.’

‘You gave a Wonderworm legs?!’ Portia exclaimed.

‘Twenty, to be precise,’ Verity said proudly, wiping her cauldron with a sparkling rag.
