Chapter Four
Edwin looked across the carriage and smiled at Julia. She was wearing a different riding habit from the time before; a brown and cream set with a matching hat adorned with feathers. Though a completely different color pallet, the outfit hugged her pretty frame just as before.
“How long has it been since you went riding?”
“Several months as I was busy planning my wedding, and then I was busy planning a funeral,” she stated, squeezing her hands together in her lap.
Edwin regretted the question the moment he heard the answer. He wished he could erase the sadness he saw in her eyes.
“I hope today will make you happy. The moment I saw you in your riding habit, I figured you must enjoy the sport.”
“I do. My father enrolled me in lessons when I was a small child. There was a time that I contemplated competing professionally. The only thing that I enjoy more is sketching.”
“Ah, yes, I remember you discussing that with Lady Wilma the night we met.”
“You recall that?” Julia asked with surprise.
“Despite how it appeared, I was paying attention to you that entire night.”
“I thought you were completely wrapped up in Lady Mary,” Julia mumbled. “I had no idea.”
“I hate to admit this, but I was using her to make you jealous. When I saw you, your beauty was overwhelming, and quite frankly, intimidating. I wanted you to know I was equally desirable.”
She laughed, causing her whole body to shake. “You could have just told me you thought I was pretty. It would have been much more effective.”
He moved across the carriage to sit next to her, then placed his hand on hers. “You’re right, I should have, but I’m going to rectify that mistake now. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, Julia Bennett.”
He reached out and touched the side of her cheek, but there was a “hmm-hmm” sound from her aunt that quickly made him drop his hand. Blasted chaperones, always ruining romantic moments. He had been moments from leaning forward and claiming her lips with his own.
What would it be like to kiss Julia? He suspected it would be like caressing two perfect pillows that tasted like the freshest honey. All he knew was that he couldn’t wait until the moment when he could do it without prying eyes stopping him.
As they pulled into the carriage house at the stables, he could see Julia’s excitement grow.
“I’ve missed riding,” she confessed. “Thank you for bringing me.”
“Are you coming with us, Miss Roberts?” Edwin inquired.
“I’m a little old to be riding horseback these days. I will be around to keep an eye on you though, so make sure to stay within the nearby riding trails.”
Edwin nodded before climbing out of the carriage and reaching up to help Julia out. They made their way to the stable office where an older man with gray hair was at the front desk. He smiled at them saying, “Good afternoon, Miss Bennett. I see you have Lord Edwin with you today.
