The cops and firemen were all gone by the time Simon and Targo came down from their observation post and strolled across the street to their next destination. Targo silently noted the two cars driving slowly toward the bomb site, then went back to the argument he'd been having with Simon since they'd left the building.

"Your game with this policeman is dangerous and undisciplined," he said. "He got to the bomb. Detonation was three hundred feet short of target."

Simon's game, as Targo choose to call it, had been carefully conceived and implemented. He would no more abandon his pursuit of McClane than he would abort the rest of the mission. ' 'Is the subway not closed? Did the roof not collapse? The rest is inconvenience, no more," he said dis-missively.

Targo remained unconvinced. "And if it's too far from the alarms?"

"If we have a problem, we will deal with it."

Targo shook his head. "We shouldn't have to. I should factor him out now."

"Patience," counselled Simon. "He keeps the police busy. Keeps their noses pointed where we want them pointed. Gives them a sense of accomplishment. Let them stand still and one of them is liable to start thinking. We'll run McClane around for another hour or so, and then collect him." He glanced sideways at his partner as he bent down to tie his shoe. "If you must worry like an old woman, then worry whether the package was successfully delivered to that particular school."

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw that the passengers from the two cars were walking parallel with himself and Targo toward the subway. They were dressed for work: one group in business suits and ties, the other in flannel shirts and jeans, a typical crew of construction workers.

Excellent. Thus far, they were right on schedule.

There was one in every crowd, the guy who just wouldn't quit. Walsh flinched as Ben Dunham sauntered over, followed by his camera crew. Dunham was the rising star of the number one TV news team, with both the good looks and relentless curiosity it took to succeed as an investigative reporter. Everyone else had given up on the story and left. But not Dunham. He was still nosing around, hunting for clues, asking questions that Walsh wasn't supposed to answer.

"Hey, Walsh! What's going on? Why'd everybody tear out of here?" he said, coming up and offering him a stick of gum.

Walsh shook his head to the gum and said, ' 'Look at your watch, coming up on shift change. Once the bean counters found out nobody got killed, they started screaming about no overtime. Had to get everybody back to precinct to punch out. The new shift will be pulling in in a few minutes."

His response was so clever he impressed even himself. But Dunham wasn't buying it. "You're so full of shit, Walsh," he said, shoving the gum in his mouth.

Before Walsh could dispute Dunham's comment, he was distracted by a loud rumbling sound. ' 'What the hell?'' he said.
