Chapter 16

I reached out and grabbed Emma by the shoulders. “What do you mean?”

She stomped her foot on the ground. “How could I have been so stupid! It’s so obvious.”

“It is?”

“We’ll burn it with lava. Fire kills everything.”

Pyrox cleared his throat. “Um, not everything.”

Emma looked at him and pointed. “Oh, right, sure. It won’t kill a blaze like you or a magma cube or a strider. But, it will kill anything that is not born in a fiery realm, that’s for sure. I mean, it might not work.” She suddenly sounded much less confident. “Um, well, actually, the substance could have fire resistance, I suppose. Still, it’s worth a try.”

“I think it’s a great idea,” the Ender King said. “If you dump lava on most living things, they do tend to burn to death. The only problem testing the hypothesis is getting a bucket of lava close enough to the sculk-like substance without being devoured by it.”

“Leave it to me,” I said, puffing out my chest. “I just need a bucket. Does anyone have one?”

Fortunately, KindTrellion was with us. “I do. I have lots of them.” She dug around in her inventory until she pulled out two buckets. “Do you want both of them?”

I shook my head. “Just one will do.” I grabbed the bucket and then transmogrified into an ender wraith, gripping the bucket in two of my claws. I screeched and rose into the air. I chuckled to myself as I watched many of the mobs and villagers scurry away as my shadow passed over them.

Once I had gained enough altitude, I glided over the Overworld searching for an exposed lava seam. As I flew, I became more and more concerned. The sculk-like substance appeared to be spreading more quickly than before. It was already pushing up against several areas of the wall surrounding Capitol City.

At least we’d been able to preserve the largest population centers. If Emma’s lava theory works, we might be able to retake the Overworld.

It didn’t take long to find an exposed lava seam near a cave about a two-minute flight from Capitol City. The skulk-like substance hadn’t completely covered this part of the Overworld, so I was able to land and scoop lava into the bucket. I returned to the sky and found the closest bit of the nefarious substance. As I hovered far enough above it to prevent it from reaching out and devouring me, I dumped the lava onto the mysterious alien cancer. I watched as the lava spread over it, bright orange, purifying. And then as the lava settled into the earth, it left behind a black scar.

The still living substance on the border of the burn scar did not seem to be moving. I had to test it though. I scanned the area and soon located a solitary wandering pig. I dove and picked him up with my talons, careful not to hurt him.

The sad pig squealed. I felt sorry for the pig as I flew back to the area with the burn mark.
