Five weeks later…

The headline for the London Times read, “Lord Thurston Arrested For Murder Of Ravenwood Countess”.

Gabe looked at the newspaper that lay on the desk, though he did not pick it up. He had already read the story at breakfast that morning – about Lord Thurston confessing that he had sent two men to kill Alice because he could not bear the thought of a bastard daughter to be chosen as the Countess of Ravenwood over his own daughter, regardless of the fact that Alice had been recognized by the Viscount of Stonecastle at his deathbed. Gabe had read the story several times, in fact, and he still could not believe that his sister’s murder had finally been resolved.

The door to the study opened and at the sight of the Count of Ravenwood, Gabe felt his heart begin to pound, the very presence of the noble having an effect on his senses. Once again, he questioned his decision, wondering if he shouldn’t have come, after all, though he forced himself to keep calm.

“Good afternoon,” Gabe greeted, keeping his voice as even as he could. “I hope my visit has not inconvenienced you.”

“You are always welcome at Ravenwood Mansion,” the Count said. “Though I admit, I did not expect to see you here.”

“I would like to thank you personally for bringing my sister’s murderer to justice,” Gabe said.

“There is no need. If you had not given me that bit of information, I would have died thinking I was responsible for her death. I am in your debt, in fact.”

Gabe shook his head. “If there is a debt, it is mine.”

“Is that all?” the Count asked.

Gabe hesitated before continuing. “I…have a few questions.”

“Go on.”

“Why did you choose my sister?”

“Why not?” the Count answered with a question of his own. “She was charming and intelligent and genuinely honest in the way most society-bred ladies of her age are not.”

Gabe nodded, satisfied. “Was she happy?”

“She was very much content during the three months of our marriage, except on the day she was killed.”

“And you’re certain she saw you?”

“I saw marks on the ground indicating that a horse had come near where I had met with my lover that day. She had been out riding, though it was not her usual route. I would not have been plagued with guilt otherwise. As it is, I have not slept with any man since, except for you.”

The revelation filled Gabe with an unprecedented sense of relief, steeling his resolve and making him blush in spite of himself, which he tried to conceal by turning his head towards the window. “I was told you were a regular client of the brothel.”

“I merely let that piece of information slip because I was curious as to who was following me around.”

“You set me up?”

“I was merely curious, yet the moment I saw you, I could not help but be captivated,” the Count said. “I apologize if my actions have caused you to suffer. I had no knowledge that you were Alice’s brother.
