Chapter Fifteen

Faye cringed as the images flooded the crystal ball. A scantily-clad brunette sitting on Nick’s lap. A horrified Beth standing in the doorway. “Oh, dear.”

Rainy gasped. “When did this happen?”

“Last night, by all indications. What are we going to do?”

“We’re fairy godmothers, not matchmakers, Faye.” Ginger crossed her arms over her chest, frowning. “There’s a reason love is on the no-wish list.”

“Oh, phooey. Nick didn’t wish for love. He wanted that work contract—which he got.”

“So, your job should be finished.” Rainy’s softer tone tempered Ginger’s bluntness.

“Well, getting the work contract was one thing, keeping it is something else altogether. The client thought a family man version of Nicholas Grey would make a better business partner… Nick found Beth… and I think they make a great couple… Except for this—” She waved her hands around. “Kerfuffle.”

Rainy squeezed Faye’s shoulder. “How is Beth doing?”

“I’m sure she’s just peachy.”

Rainy, and even Ginger, balked at Faye’s sarcastic tone.

Faye rested her head in her hands. “Do you ever feel this job is getting… too difficult?”

“Oh, Faye.” Rainy sat beside her. “I know it’s frustrating, but people out there need our help. And, doesn’t it feel good to help others? That’s why we’re here in the first place. How three fairies adrift among humans banded together. Your passion and enthusiasm even won Ginger over.”

“Hey.” Ginger looked indignant.

“You know I’m right.” Rainy smirked at Ginger before returning her attention to Faye. “You’ve been out of sorts ever since Gilen showed up.”

“Rainy’s right. Are you ever going to tell us the full story?”

Faye stilled, uncharacteristically quiet. They were her best friends and, bless them, they’d never asked for more than the bare bones of her life before they met. They knew about her politically connected family and her desire to steer clear of politics, but there was so much she’d omitted. In a way, they were all trying to atone for past sins.

“Faye?” Rainy’s eyes were wide with concern. “We just want you to be happy.”

Faye offered a half-hearted smile. “It’s a long story.”

“I have a pie in the oven.” Rainy jumped up when the timer dinged.

Ginger grinned. “I’ll put the kettle on.”

With a steaming mug of tea and generous slice of blueberry pie in front of her, Faye squared her shoulders. “Gilen is my betrothed.”

Rainy and Ginger exchanged wide-eyed looks of surprise.

“My family followed the noble fairy family tradition of betrothal at birth. Gilen and I were to be married when I turned twenty-five. I would’ve honored my commitment if not for the premonition I had concerning the deaths of my mother and brother.”
