Chapter 9

I can barely even concentrate enough throughout the day to know if the bands I audition are any good. Now that Jeremiah and Ezekiel aren't sneaking to come see me, we're back to texting all day, so between that and anticipation for tonight, I'm basically counting on Heather to be the one paying attention to the bands today. They won't tell me where we're going, and knowing me, have forbidden me from looking up nearby restaurants.

"Somebody's distracted," Heather sing-songs.

I cut my eyes to her. "It's all your fault. Them being here, and now I can't think of anything but them. You know, them and the burger you lured me to stay in my room with."

She laughs. "I will fully take the blame for facilitating love."

Love, my mind whispers. My eyes widen at the sound of it, because, for the first time, it isn't a hiss or a scoff at the word. But an...embracement of it. It feels equal parts exciting and terrifying, but what it feels like most, is a realization. More like a revelation for me. I love them.

I love them.

It happened somewhere in the time that I was still trying to convince myself that I didn't feel anything for them at all. It happened with each text and call that went late into the night. It happened with each touch and kiss. It happened as I laid between them at night and woke up between them in the morning.

"What's that look about?" she asks, brows furrowed.

I just smile, not even knowing if I'm ready to say the words to Ezekiel and Jeremiah, let alone her. "Nothing. Um, I definitely wasn't paying a bit of attention though, so were any of them good?"

"The second one." She chuckles, shaking her head. "I think they'll do the best with giving a good mixture of music."

I nod. "We'll go with them, then."

"Really?" she exclaims.

"You say they're good, then they're the ones."

She smiles and I love that I could give her a little confidence boost. I definitely know I needed it when I was in college. Before Sophie and Charlotte had come along, I'd only had my mother to encourage me, and her encouragements were short while her stories of her newest loves were long. This event for the hospital could either make or break my career. If I impressed the men and women coming there, people with very deep pockets, then I'd be set. If I failed though, they wouldn't give me a chance. I don't even know if Law could persuade the board to use me for the next event.

Planning Sophie and Laws' wedding was one thing. The pressure was more so about making sure my best friend had the best, most stress-free day possible. This charity event, however, had much more pressure, and a lot more riding on it.

"All right," I say, pushing everything aside for the moment to focus. "What else do we need to get done?"

"Obviously, Jackson is all set as the chef. Since you confirmed the menu options he provided, the only thing now is making sure everything he needs is there.
