Chapter 17

Egan

After the events at the mall, the car chase, and the mutual orgasms, my body is drained, and I’m asleep before Casper even gets me back into the front seat. The next time I wake, our surroundings are much the same, trees as far as the eye can see. But instead of leaf-covered ground, we are surrounded by fluffy white snow. I gasp and press my face against the window to take in the beauty.

“I haven’t seen this much snow since I was a kid,” I say, unable to pull my gaze away. “I was born and raised in the mountains. Mama and her family were all ice dragons like me, and she wanted our private home to be surrounded by the cold. It’s all so fresh and fluffy and pretty. I just want to roll around in it.”

“Me too. It looks like heaven,” Drake says with a purr.

“Is that the home that was attacked and burned down?” Casper asks, and I turn with a smile.

“No. Mama kept that home’s location a secret. She wanted it to be our special safe place where we could be free from the burden of being the royal family. He attacked us at our main house, where we spent most of our time.”

I was so broken and alone, desperate for something to cling to. But after watching my second home burn to the ground, I couldn’t bring myself to risk it.

“Do you have a hoard there? We could go there and gather a few things to bring back to the club if you don’t feel safe staying there,” Casper offers, giving my leg a comforting squeeze.

“We kept a few things there, but since the house was so small and we only went there a few times a year, our main hoards were at the house that was attacked.” I turn back to look out the window, watching the snowfall in fluffy white flakes. “I would like to go back there, but I can’t until Reaves is dealt with.”

“How can he be stopped?” Casper asks, and I shudder.

“With my parent’s gone and me presumed dead, he’s taken the throne as king. If an attack was made on his life, it would be considered an act of war. The only way to stop him would be for me to step forward and claim my rightful spot as king. But after so many years, he has gathered a dedicated following, so I would likely have to challenge him to prove I’m a worthy king.”

“Do you think if you were to full-shift,
