Chapter Nine

Samantha

Had it not been for his firm arms wrapped around me, I probably would’ve collapsed to the white sand beneath my feet.

White sand?

I forgot all about the stomach-lurching, rollercoaster sensation that happened soon after the shadows in my apartment swarmed around my body.

Blinking against the bright, warm rays of yellow light beaming down on me, I held a hand up, shielding my face from the sun. My mouth dropped open at the sight before me. The bright blue ocean. The tide lapping gently at the shore. Behind me, a lush green forest and a very smug demon who looked hotter than sin in his heavy armor.

I gaped at him; mind fully boggled. “This is seriously Hawaii?”

He started removing pieces of his armor, dropping them to the sand as he went. They landed with more weight than I would’ve expected, sending sand spraying across my feet.

“You asked for tropical paradise,” he said, stripping down to a pair of black underwear that hugged his thick thighs and seemed surprisingly modern. I suddenly felt like a nun in my ankle-length sundress. “Your wish has been granted.”

I wagged a finger at him, throwing out what I hoped was a saucy grin. “Not quite.” Walking backwards in the sand, I tied my dress up around my knees and slid free from my strappy sandals. The sand between my toes felt spectacular, but it barely held a candle to the cool surf that washed over them. “What’s a view like this even made for if you’re not going to frolic in it?”

He sat down in the sand and laid back on his arms. Seeing his chest flex in the sun was just...not fair. He smirked like he knew how easily distracted I was by his bare skin. “In case you’ve forgotten, I’m a Warbringer. I don’t frolic.”

“You sure about that?” I teased, kicking at the refreshing water. He just sat there, watching me closely, refusing to fall for my bait. Fine. I was no stranger to extreme measures.

I had summoned him, after all.

The pulse in my throat fluttered from my private thoughts. I glanced up and down the beach again. Other than a distant boat I could only see if I squinted, we were alone. Totally. Completely. Alone.

Emboldened by that knowledge, I grabbed the hem of my dress and pulled it over my head, leaving me in nothing but curves and lace. Sadly, I was wearing red instead of purple, but it got the job done all the same.

Kalix was on his feet in the next heartbeat, hands fisting at his sides. His gaze burned against me, making me glad for the water up to my calves as I went deeper still, throwing my sundress to the dry sand.

I scooped up a handful of cool wetness and poured it down my front, body shivering. Nipples beading. Barely-there cloth going completely see-through. I felt his answering growl between my legs, and then he was charging forward. A heat-seeking missile headed straight for its target. Laughing, I darted away from him, splashing through the water to evade his reaching hands.
