Mell-o Yell-o

Long shift at the deli counter. I guess nobody around here wants to cook on Friday nights, because they all seem to end up at the back of the store, ordering our greasy, overcooked chicken tenders.

I overheard a story, as I served up reheated chicken. There were these two rich ladies waiting in my line—for feta and prosciutto, as it turned out—and one was telling the other what she considered to be a “horror story” about the house-sitter breaking a bottle of wine.

“Not the Barolo we gave you!” the other lady said.

“No, no—a reasonable Cab. The damn fool woman broke it against the wall, would you believe. Milton and I arrive home to find a bloody mess and a harried letter of apology. I tell you, the damage is more than just surface-deep. We may need to have the whole wall replaced.”

“You're kidding!”

“That's what our handyman told us. Worse yet, Milton noticed wine spots on the Chagall!”

“The lithograph, you mean?”

The lady telling the story pinched her lips, because I guess that was some sort of insult. “Yes, well, it's still a Chagall.”

“But it's under glass, isn't it? How could it have been stained by wine?”

I'm imagining a network of house-sitters, contractors and art restorers who all team up to break wine bottles in wealthy people's houses so the trades need to be called in to fix all the damage. That's the kind of network I could really get behind.

Anyway, I overcharged the rich ladies for their fancy meats and cheeses. By a lot. Didn't benefit me in any way, but I got great satisfaction out of doing it.

Rylie worked a morning shift, but she swung by the store at closing so we could walk to the tax lady's house together. Even after all this time, I still haven't learned anybody's names, apart from Jeremiah, Rylie and the basement-dweller. There's no one else I really care about, so why bother?

When the zombie show came on, I did my usual escape routine, creeping around the basement, waiting for Melly to find me. I could hear the show she was watching through her door, so she was definitely in her bedroom. I made a bit more noise, hoping to coax her out, but nothing worked.

Finally, I knocked and said, “Melly? It's Delta. Can I come in?”

The door whipped open. Melly looked mad. She growled, “Why did you call me that?”

“Call you what?” I asked.

Her lips pursed like the rich lady at the store. In a whisper, she said, “Why did you call me Melly?”

“That's your name,” I told her, indicating the Hello My Name Is sticker on her bookshelf.

She turned to see what I was pointing at. When her gaze landed on the sticker, it was like she'd never seen it there before. The angry crimson colour drained from her face, and she turned paler than I'd ever seen her.

“Only one person ever gets to call me Melly,” she said. “And it's not you.”

“Who is it?” I asked.

“Never mind.”

She stepped away from the door, but she left it open, so I went in.
