4.

“WHERE ARE WE GOING?” Danny asked. The group stuffed their shoulder bags with bottles of water and packaged snacks. He suspected, considering he couldn't off himself, that he no longer needed food and water to survive because starving himself or intentionally dehydrating himself was the same as cutting open his wrists or swan diving off the Rio Grande. He didn't bother packing a bag and stuffed a bottle of water in his back pocket, only because he hated the cottonmouth feeling and the dryness of the desert air had that effect on him.

Owen threw a strap over his shoulder and hurried past Danny. “We're going to see Lady Solstice.”

“Lady who?”

“Lady Solstice,” Trish clarified. “She's a witch.”

“Oh, of course she is.”

Trish rolled her eyes and strolled past Danny. His gaze followed her to the door.

Dozer handed Danny a package of peanuts, which he declined with a wave. Danny's hunger had left him, leaving behind a hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach. He continued to watch Trish as she hustled through the open doorway, disappearing into the sandy outside.

“Don't even think about it,” Dozer warned. “Chick will rip off your dick.”

“I'm strangely okay with that,” Danny said, cracking his knuckles.

“Seriously. Don't.”

Danny raised his palms in surrender. “You got it, bro-dude.” He lowered his hands slowly and turned to the rest of the group, all of whom were continuing to stuff their packs with necessary supplies. “So, who's this Lady Solstice character and why are we trekking across the desert to see her?”

Tanya nodded at Danny. “Ian believes Lady Solstice knows how to defeat the demons. She's somewhat of an oracle. He thinks so anyway. Last time we traveled out there, she said the angels would send us a sign. A symbol of hope.”

“Oh yeah. And did they?”

Silence ruled the room.

Then, Tanya nodded. “Yeah,” she said quietly. “You.”
