Once they'd arrived in a town with a stop light, Luke had bailed and run. He didn't look back, and he had no idea whatever happened to her.

All Luke knew was that he had survived one messed-up lady. In many ways, he'd felt sorry for her. Luke knew exactly what it was like to have someone he loved, someone he thought loved him, bash him so brutally.

That stung in more ways than one. There was the physical damage that anyone with eyes could see, but there were also emotional scars that ran so deep they could literally make the body ache worse than the blows ever could.

Another pair of lights flashed up behind Luke, illuminating the road and casting his shadow long. Dutifully he stuck out his thumb. A shiny new pickup truck with two guys in it pulled over ahead of him, and he jogged up to the passenger window. Right as he leaned into talk, the guy pulled away, laughing.

Luke shrugged and sighed. Back when he was younger, he would have screamed obscenities and flashed them the single finger salute, but he didn't bother with that crap anymore. Getting angry served no purpose.

He was pretty certain the guy and his buddy thought that was real original. It wasn't. Assholes had done that to Luke more times than he could count. At least they hadn't wasted his time. Some guys would pull over, ask him a bunch of warped questions, then peel out. For the life of him, Luke didn't understand what they got out of such an exchange. Did it make them feel superior? Did they just feel the world was too nice of a place so they had to spread their dickholitry around? Who knew? But since he'd hitched a lot, and would likely be on the road all night, Luke had plenty of time to ponder such things.

Thinking about hitching was a hell of a lot better than thinking about Dillinger.

"Ah, Dilly. What a mess I've made."

But Luke was on his way to cleaning it up. Dillinger deserved a hell of a lot better than what Luke could ever give him. But damn, last night had been more than he'd ever had, more than he'd ever expected to have. As soon as he'd kissed Dillinger his entire being--mind, body, and soul--had felt a rightness so profound he'd almost cried. It was as if all the roads he'd Dedicated Alpha

run on led him right back to Dillinger. He was strong, safe, and secure.

Nothing would ever ruffle him. Dilly would never lash out in anger.

Moreover, when Dillinger topped, he had a mouth on him that damn near made Luke climax hands free. He shivered just thinking about not just what he'd said, but the way he'd looked at Luke. That dark, hungry look.

Dreamily, Luke reached up and touched the mark on his neck. In the mirror this morning as they'd brushed their teeth, his gaze kept darting to both of their necks. Their shirt collars covered up the marks, but knowing they were there pleased him.
