Inside his historic row-house, he stripped down naked in the entryway underneath the crystal chandelier, letting his soaked clothes crumple on the marble foyer. He padded across the cool floor leaving moist foot prints and climbed the hardwood staircase to his master suite. A shiver hastened his steps to the master bath. He needed a hot shower. The chill from walking home in the rain was still with him.

His luxury row-house, built in 1915, had been beautifully renovated and professionally decorated to fit his bachelor lifestyle. The interior designer had preserved the past character of the home while adding some modern charm. She told him there was a science to blending the old and new. The living area had a 10-foot ceiling, tall windows and a wall accented by a wood-burning fireplace surrounded by floor-to-ceiling plain-sawn cherry wood hearth. Several walls had the original exposed brick. A light cream leather couch adorned with bright colored pillows sat on top of an oriental rug. Modern artwork hung above the couch. He could not figure out what the artist had painted, but he did like the colors. Mounted on a wall facing his favorite chair was a large screen HD TV. His office, with multiple black stained bookshelves, a mahogany desk and high back leather chair, was located across the foyer from the living area. He did not spend much time in either of these rooms. Most of his time was spent at his Capitol Hill office.

It wasn't the beautiful molding, the cozy courtyard, the impressive staircase, or the historic charm that made him open his wallet and buy the over-priced home. The two things that sold him on the place was its location and the gourmet kitchen. He wanted to be able to walk to work and this location was perfect. When the realtor showed him the home, he did not notice the crystal chandelier in the foyer. But the moment the realtor showed him the kitchen, his inner chef began to visualize the meals he could prepare on the six-burner commercial grade range. The Sub-Zero refrigerator was awesome. The kitchen was clad with premium finishes and fixtures along with a pantry large enough to stock food for a year. He signed the contract that evening.

Abeedah taught him how to prepare Dam Kay Boti Kabab in this kitchen. He learned about Halal food and Islamic customs through her eyes. Abeedah was an American Muslim. Their candlelight meals were followed by wonderful conversations. He loved waking up the next morning, her lying next to him. She was a strikingly beautiful and intelligent woman who made him feel alive. I should have stood up for her when the handler made accusations. I let my ambition blind me.

The hot pulsating spray from the shower ran across his skin allowing his muscle fibers to loosen and relax. The earlier meeting with his handler caused him to tighten the muscles in his neck and shoulders so much they began to ache.

He felt a tinge of jealousy about Megan.
