CHAPTER 13

Paige looked up and wondered why both men were glowering, not so much at her, but at Anne.

“Ben, you and Paige are going to need to give Anne and I a bit of privacy,” said Gabe.

“Not yet. And she knows Wyvern was a dragon,” said Anne coolly.

“How does she know that?” asked Ben.

“It came up in the conversation. I believe I mentioned it first and Anne assured me Wyvern was dead and that Tristan had killed him. She also told me that the four of you have swords that are somehow connected and mentioned the name of Gabe’s. My guess is I can find the connection if I Google it. For what it’s worth, I told her I’ve been acting as a whistleblower for the DOJ for the past two years,” said Paige, the words tumbling out just like water running over pebbles.

“You told the DOJ about Wyvern?” asked Ben.

“No,” she said thoughtfully. “They never would have believed me. I told them about what he was doing and who he was, but not what he was. But I found out some things about my father, and I think he was connected to Wyvern and whatever he was up to. I also told Anne that Meeks was handling all of Wyvern’s transactions and that the records documenting more than a few of those transactions have ceased to exist.” She turned to Ben. “Oh, and your paperwork for the farm is finished. You just need to sign and give me a certified check, then I get the sellers to sign and depending on when they do that, I can get their mortgage paid in full and the deed signed off.”

Gabe glanced at his watch. “Angie is going to watch the bakery with Daphne and Tony, which means Tristan and Goody are en route and bringing lunch. Gillian has no guests today, so she and Ford are headed up here as well.”

“I take it Tony is with Angie and Daphne…” started Paige.

“Because you are now living among cavemen. The group consensus is that your Ben is Cro Magnon while the rest of us are stuck with Neanderthals,” supplied Anne.

“Careful, baby, or I’ll go all Neanderthal on your ass,” said Gabe.

Paige couldn’t tell if he was angry or teasing—perhaps a bit of both. “I think you should know I would never betray you.”

Ben looked to Gabe. “We may as well tell her about the swords, don’t you think? Because she’s right, knowing about Courechouse will lead her to the others.”

“I need coffee,” sighed Gabe, “and something sweet to eat.” He turned and shook his finger at Anne, “And don’t you get sassy with me. You’re already skating on thin ice.”

“Why would anyone want to skate on thin ice? That’s dangerous.” She sauntered past Gabe, heading toward the kitchen and catching Paige’s hand as she passed.

“Remember what Tristan told me about Goody and Gillian becoming friends with Anne? I don’t think that one is going to improve anything.” Gabe shook his head as he looked after the two women.
