When Simon called her the next day, Januaryâs immediate thought was that her ploy had been rumbled. It was almost a relief when Simon told her that security had been tightened so much at the research centre he was scared for his life.
âWill that affect your sales?â she asked, curious.
âWhereâs the empathy?! But no, it wonât, thanks for asking.â
She then asked him to explain more about what he meant by saying security had been tightened.
âScary hired werewolves are the muscle, but Cadence is here all the time. She watches everyone like a hawk. Especially me.â
âYou should take it as a compliment,â January told him.
Simon sighed. âIâd rather the other one was here⦠Emerson. Heâs far more my type.â
âHe could kill you just the same as she could. Donât forget, Cadence can become invisible - really invisible - not just on an ethereal plane.â
âThanks for the reminder. Iâll be sure to wear my X-ray glasses at all times.â
âIf youâre still able to be sarcastic it canât be that bad.â
âAre you kidding? Iâm on the edge here! Youâre at home, nice and cosy, and Iâm out on the frontline.â There was some inaudible grumbling January chose to find inaudible. Sheâd definitely heard her name followed by a few unrepeatable words.
âLook, even though this is all going on, I managed to find something else.â Simon took a deep breath. âI managed to go over to Delimonâs old desk. I slid the desk drawer out and there was something taped onto the bottom of it. I slipped that up my sleeve, lest anyone invisible be watching, and waited until I was safely home before I looked at what Iâd found.â
âWhat was it?â January could barely contain her excitement. Had Delimon really been working on a way to kill The Clan? Had he already found what they were looking for?
âStrange markings. They looked like theyâd been taken from a rubbing. Iâll draw them for youâ¦â A moment later, January was looking at three blue glowing symbols floating in the air.
They looked awfully familiar.
âThere are some others, too, but theyâre pretty similar.â
âWas that all there was?â January asked, her heart sinking.
âYeah, but they must be important, right? If he went to all of that trouble to hide them? I think it might have been what he died for. Where do you think he took the rubbings from?â
âA sword and shield,â January told him.
There was a pause.
âHow do you know that?â
âBecause Iâve already got them.â She took a deep breath. âSimon, I think Bruce Delimon was somehow responsible for the sword and shield getting into my hands in the first place. They were on the weapons rack when I went into the arena. I donât know how he knew Iâd choose the sword and shield.â She hesitated, thinking about the meanings behind the symbols and the knowledge that they werenât just writing. They were magic - of a sort. âOne of the symbols means destiny. Perhaps he thought Iâd choose it because of that, or rather - theyâd choose me.
