Holly stepped on it, her clunky car revving beneath her, the engine vibrating up through her legs. The siren wailed, commanding her to pull over. She pushed her car to go faster, flying down the dirt roads. Adrenaline rushed.
Trent stated he didn’t want to play games. His actions said otherwise. She did absolutely nothing wrong by stopping at the Poppletons for a friendly visit. Where was Millicent now with her flashing camera and sarcastic wit?
The light flashing behind her, Holly sped forward. She jumped ahead to the possible outcomes. She’d seen too many car chases in movies and TV shows to know the outcome was never positive. She imagined flipping over, her car bursting into flames. She slowed and pulled over. Furious. Scared. Shaky.
She rolled down her window, ready to strike. The blue uniform appeared beside her. “I know, I know,” she said, not attempting to hide the sarcasm. “Speeding, right? Save it for the judge.”
“Ma’am, step out of the car, please.”
A feeling of dread passed through her. Her scalp tingled. That wasn’t Trent’s voice. She peered at a female cop, black hair stretched tight into a bun behind her head, hat pushed forward, starched uniform, not a wrinkle to be seen. She could’ve sworn it was Trent who pulled up behind her—or had she imagined it? Assumed?
Holly stepped out under the judging eye of this cop she’d never seen. “I’m sorry. I don’t think we’ve ever met.”
The cop said nothing, her face expressionless, eyes cold.
Holly giggled, more out of nerves, knowing this wasn’t the right response. “I know. You want one of my cheesecakes? There in the back.”
Not even a hint of smile. “Are you bribing an officer of the law?”
“No, Ma’am. I mean, Sir. I mean, Ma’am.” She briefly closed her eyes, hoping, wishing, she were anywhere, even Alaska during a blizzard. “Are you new on the force? I’m new to town and thought I’d met most of the police.”
“I’m Chief Hardy.” She offered Holly a curt nod. “Walk a straight line, please.”
What? She had to be kidding. At the most, Holly had a glass of wine per week. The sinking sun told her it was afternoon. “I am not a lush, thank you very much.
“Walk a straight line. Toe to toe, please.”
“Could you call Officer Trinket?”
“Ma’am. I suggest you follow orders.”
Stifling the huff, Holly put her arms out and walked toe to toe. She wobbled once, more due to nerves than anything.
“Place your arms out and then touch your fingers to your nose, respectively.”
Holly obeyed. “Seriously. Officer Trinket can vouch for me.”
“Why were you visiting the Poppletons?”
“I’m sorry. I think we got off on the wrong foot. I never should’ve tried to outrun you but I thought you were Trent and you see...” Holly couldn’t finish her thought because she hadn’t really thought that far. If she’d thought it wasn’t Trent, she would’ve pulled over right away. She forced a smile. “I’m new in town. Owner of Just Cheesecake. You should stop by for a slice. On the house.
